Do you put a cake board under the cake AND put it on the cake separator?

Not stupid at all! I do it to add more stability for my stacked cakes. Makes it easier to remove the cake from the separator plate as well!

There are no stupid questions....

I also learned to put toasted coconut on the bottom layer so that when you pick up the top cake with the cake seperator, the cake is still iced and looks fairly nice for presentation with the coconut.

I would think that you could use other stuff, but the coconut is a good start.

Anyone else??

Good Luck.

I use a cake board also but I try to cut it as close or smaller than the cake size so it won't show.
My Gran in England taught me to sprinkle powdered sugar under cakes to help with the sticking problem.

yes, I do both. cardboard and plastic plate between all tiers. I've never had a sticking problem.... if you have a good crusting BC, you should be fine.

To illustrate, if you look in my photos (last page, last 6 pics), you can see a cake that I've disassembled. You can see the imprint of the cake plate on top of the tier, showing that it WAS sitting right on the icing, but when I took it apart, the icing remained in place.
