Has anyone seen these or does anyone know about decorating them? I ran across them on ebay and after googling them I came across several websites that specialize in them. They take regular sugar cubes and decorate them with Royal Icing designs. I like intricate things so I bought some sugar cubes....talk about a small canvas! I learned alot about icing thickness' last night, LOL. I tried it out and the first 50 went in the trash. I pulled out the smallest tips I had and used those. I finally went with mini rosettes using tip 16, I think and then I used the PME #0 tip to pipe the sepals, a small stem, and a leaf. People market these as shower favors and gifts. Since the Royal Icing is mostly sugar, it melts into the coffee or tea along with the sugar cube. I just think they are darling! Very challenging, too. I've ordered a set of PME tips so that I have more small openings to choose from to try different designs. If anyone knows about these, I would love advice on how to use the different kinds of small tips to get different designs. I've included a picture of the ones I did last night.

I don't think this ones would be a good business, you can't charge too much but is so much effort. I've been ask to do them, and also jordan almonds, that way, and I've said no!

You did a great job, I have done these too and they are a lot of fun.
I used them as Gifts and just for fun. At Christmas kids were eating them like Candy, I had them sitting next to the Coffee. I told all the parents to watch them. icon_rolleyes.gif

It's amazing how much some places will charge for these. I think if you are in the correct market for them they are a lot of fun and if you sit down and do a lot, it might work out. You can keep them forever.
The only thing is that the Royal Icing fades, so you have to make it quite dark if you make them ahead of time. They will mostly melt in the coffee, but be aware there is a bit of a film from the meringue powder. icon_redface.gif

To help with the decorating, you can also Spray the back of your cube a different color to help with the fun. See picture below!

You did a great job, keep on doing some more. thumbs_up.gif

gateaux,

Thank you for the links and picture! Those are cute! I don't know whether I would make them for a business venture or not. I just like doing intricate detailed things and these appealed to me. I have a back disability, so since most of the time I'm having to sit, these are something easy for me to practice some intricate piping skills on. I never knew about them before. My best friend absolutely loved them. I'm definitely going to make more.

When I was in the military I used to do them for the Officers' wives tea. They went over great then. I usually added them to the lil cakes I did for them and I always did this with no charge. But trust me the tips were great then. icon_wink.gif

I did some little flowers for Valentine last year. Not my best work, but anyhow, they are in my pictures. I think.

If you want to try small roses, you can try a tip 101s that should allow you to do little roses right on the tops.

You can also get larger sugar cubes from some places, the brand name is Peruche, only problem with these is that 1 pound of sugar cubes will cost you $6.00 to $8.00 just for the cubes, but they are larger (they come from Europe).

I also get brown sugar cubes from Canada, those are $1.50 per lb, I get my MIL to send them to me. They are great and they taste good to.

I will try and see if there is a site that ships these to the states.

Good Luck.
