I just did my first 2 this week as soon as my DH puts them on my disc I will post them. Someone gave me an airbrush last week since they bought a new one it kind of worked but I need a better compressor I didn't achieve the results on my second cake (Batman fbtf) that I wanted I was using a birthday card pic for the design. I'm Looking forward to having it work properly. Maybe its just the airbrush and thats why she bought a new one.

I'm looking forward to seeing them, Sharon. What kind of airbrush is it? I am going to break down and get the kopykake airbrush. Maybe yours just needs a good cleaning?

Here's a few... I'm not very creative with it!! icon_confused.gif

I feel I need to explain the army cake... I call that my grocery store cake. The lady wanted an army cake, but didn't want to pay. That was the best I could do for her for the price she wanted to pay... icon_lol.gif

It's a badger with the bottle it gave me a chance to see if I would use one my hubby was just on line and wants me to get the kopykake too and I can give this one to my daughter. The bottle takes alot of color and waste.

There is one on my pictures that is the horse cake.
I love my little airbrush. It's not soo powerful as to blow holes in the frosting and i can get quite fine lines with it. I just did a cake at work of a portrait of shreck for an emloyee that was leaving us. I hope to post that one soon.

These are all great! I think an airbrush is a 'must have'.

Sweetsuccess - how do you get the gold along the bottom? I actually bought some luster dust but am not sure how to apply it. Did you mix with vodka and paint it on with a brush? It looks sooo smooth.

Chaptips - Did you freehand that? If so, you are my hero.

TamiAZ - The army cake works. All my cakes are the same price so I don't have the same dilemma. If I have the time I can be a bit more creative and experiment. If I don't have time, my cakes turn out looking like walmart cakes at best. I'm very new to this but loving it. I only do ice cream cakes.

I've been told you can pour the color back onto the bottle. icon_smile.gif

Mine is a top feed, the little cup on the top, and I have to becareful not to turn it sideways when using it.

I used (homemade) stencils to do the ballons as well as the school loge and words on the black and yellow cake.

On the Welcome Baby cake I used the airbrush to color the top part of the cake, leaving a white hole in the center. (The color actually matched the blue icing, my flash just changes the colors icon_sad.gif)

You can also use the airbrush to color whole cakes. I did a cake this weekend for my nephew and he wanted it all blue. Instead of coloring the icing I just used the airbrush. I have also used it for luster and pearl dusts on cakes and bows.

With the sun and moon I used stencils to do them then painted with black gel color mixed with vodka to get the details and the black around it.

My avatar pig is airbrushed and the Bratz and Spa day cakes in my photos are also air-brushed. I'm with Texas Sugar on the luster and pearl - it really looks great. I did pearl on the girl communion cake and many others....so pretty.

Where did you find the Chef Master? I Googled it and didn't come up with anything.

Everyone - what kind of airbrushes do you have? What do you like and dislike about it?

Since I will be doing a lot of cakes, I don't mind spending money on a good one.

I guess you couldn't find it because it's one word Chefmaster located in
Santa Ana,Calif I bought mine at a wholesale warehouse in Vancouver,B.C called Nicolesons. For some reason I thought it was 2 words. Came with compressor and 12 airbrush colors $335.

I really need to get a real airbrush. I bought mine at wal-mart, supposed to be used for model cars. It works great for just applying color, but you can't do any detail work with it. It works for now, until I can get myself a really good one. I would like to see which one's you all have and prefer.

Hi everyone,

I bought an airbrush last year but I don't really know how to use it. When I tried it the first time I wanted a light colour so I mixed the colour with water but that just made the surface of the cake sticky (cake was covered in fondant) and it looked awful.

I bought some white colour so thought I would try mixing that with my other colours to get a light colour but have been told to use vodka as well. How much vodka should I use just a few drops or more? Does anyone know where I can find out any other tips or info on airbrushing on cakes?

thanks icon_smile.gif

As far as I have read you shouldn't add anything to the airbrush colors. Maybe spray at a distance and don't go over the same area for a lighter color. Do you have a control on the compressor for the pressure or don't press all the way down on the triger for a lighter spray that seems to work for me. I tried using my reg colors and it didn't work as well its hard to get the right consistancy.

I just got my airbrush for my birthday and have not had too many chances to use it - it is the one in the link posted by cakesondemand. It was way cool to play with though! Unfortunately we are in the process of moving this June so I won't really be able to play until later this summer.

The mermaid cake in my gallery is all I have done with it so far. I have a luau cake due this weekend so I am planning on busting it out again!
