I'm doing a gondola hat, and I can't find an impression mat for the straw look. Any ideas?

I'm also using real ribbon (not wired) around the crown. How do you attach it at the ends? I'm planning on attaching a separate piece of the ribbon to give the hat a "tail" sort of where the 2 ends meet -- hope that makes sense. How do I attach that to the rest of the ribbon?

TIA -- S.

Have you tried looking in the clay section of Michael's or AC Moore? They have some small impression mats. I think one of the sets I bought has a mat in it that I could use to get that type of straw weave look.

When I did a Mexican Hat for a cake last summer, I used a basketweave tip and made impressions in the fodant. It takes a while, but it works!

S.:
On the Wilton site, there is the "Margarita Cake" with a hat in the center of the cake. In the description, I believe it gives you the details of how to get that straw look.
Is the hat buttercream or fondant? You could attach the ribbon (at the ends) with dots of buttercream and let it dry. Try piping gel to attach the "tail" to the hat band ribbon? Or make some sort of loop and use a straight pin - obviously telling someone about the pin! icon_smile.gif

Thanks everyone, I'm off to the Wilton site to check that out! I may very well end up using the pin idea too --

I'm using BC -- wish she liked fondant, but them's the breaks!

It may be too late for this cake, but Dick Blick carries clear plastic impression sheets called Rubbing plates that I like to use on fondant or even for melted chocolate wraps. Great designs, click each thumbnail to see the pattern designs.

Wow! Those look really cool! So Shirley, you have used these?
How big are they? Are they flexible?
What did you use them on?
I am seriously thinking about purchasing some....so several different ones come in a pak?

Thanks so much for the info! I actually found his site from you I think on another post when I was searching for impressions. Do you think the rubbing plates will work on BC?

Thanks Again! thumbs_up.gif

I did this straw hat for The League of Women Voters on their anniversary. I used buttercream and piping tip. The ribbon attached by pressing it to the buttercream. Good luck!

Very pretty! Thank you for sharing your photo. icon_smile.gif

I did a practice cake and ended up using tip 42 to create the effect with bc. I couldn't find anything that would work as an impression mat. My students enjoyed the practice cake, and it came out nice. I'll post the final cake when I make it in June. Thanks again everyone!
