I really would like to know how to correctly pronounce "fondant"! Is it "fond"-"ont", "fond"-"unt"....?! Do you put the emphasis on the beginning of the word, or the last part? I know this sounds like a ridiculous question but I would feel much better if I knew I was pronouncing the word correctly! Thanks for your help.

Well, I'm sure people from different parts of the country say it both ways!

Get this: I was discussing a wedding cake with a lady once for her daughter, and she referred to it as "that cake putty they use for icin'!" icon_confused.gif

Yeah...

I thought you'd like that one. Sorry I'm no help!

LOL, just to double check myself I looked it up on dictionary.com. You pronounce it like fond-unt. I made MMF for the first time last night and hubby kept asking what that loaf was on the counter wrapped in plastic. I told him the word 3 times and then he said spell it. LOL, then he said he had never heard of such a thing.

It is funny you asked this question after we had that discussion last night. I thought maybe I wasn't saying it right for him to understand what I was saying. icon_biggrin.gif

I pronounce it fon'-dent. My cousin insists on calling it fon'-dahnt', like she's in France. But I was a french major and she's not even pronouncing it correctly in french! LOL

That's funny - fon-dahnt. Is that like shopping at Tar-jey instead of Target? I have an old aunt who insists that a vase (vayse) that cost over $25 is pronounce Vahz!

Actually, tastycakes---ummm, your Auntie would be correct in that one lil' area! icon_rolleyes.gif

I (as many "well bred" lil' Southern girls have before me) attended the Letitia Baldridge Schoold of Etiquette for Little Girls. And, after that, I actually was made to do the "finishing school" route.

She's right. A "vase" that's priced over $25.00 in value, anywhere in the world, is customarily referred to as a "vase," prounced--Vahz.

But, when I arrest ole' Sadie, she just calls it her "Mason Jar!"

Girls, it's a dang vase!

LOL--Knox-- icon_razz.gif

NO--actually, they paid for law school...

But ARGUING with people wasn't my idea of real fun.

I thought I'd be helping people more this way.

Yeah...Daddy was fine with it. Momma, on the other hand...

Thanks, cakeswithattitude! I'm in culinary school for pastry arts, and one of my chefs pronounces it fon-dahnt...but Collete Peters pronounces it fon-dent, so that's how I choose to say it! Glad to know that I'm saying it the right way!

That is so funny DeniseMaraine. My husband calls it the same thing. Although since he doesn't like it, it usually comes out more like "that fondue sh*t"!
