I have a powdered red food color...seems to work pretty good....the longer it sets, the more it will absorb the color as well.
I have heard people starting out with a different color, like orange and/or pink, then adding the red. It always seems to take a lot of it no matter what.

Sometimes I add different shades of red food coloring but you do have to add a lot! Americolor is the best!

I agree Americolor is the way to go. It also gets deeper in color after it sits for a while.
With Wilton you will never get true red just dark pink.

I agree, Americolor super red is great. Let it sit a day or two and it will deepen.

Hi---I just finished a red elmo--pic on profile--had trouble with wilton color. I added 6 one oz. bottles of red trying to get red--also ended up adding one box jello(for color) and one pgk. koolaid(for color) to half recipe bc. This all withend 5 days--so it wasn't "cureing" time. I still ended up with pink icing! I would recommend Americolor anytime!! I even e mailed wilton concerning this!(told to add 1/2 bottle red to bc and I would get red! They didn't read my mess. that I had already added 6 bottles! LOL!) So--my kitchen will have Americolor from now on! Oh--how did I get red icing? I HAD to cheat--lol--I went to local grocery store bakery and they sold me 2 large cups of red! HTH!

I had to make a red bird for a cake and I started out making a deep pink B/C then I started adding the red and then let it sit for about 30 minutes and it turned out a nice color red

I use Americolor Super Red and make my icing a day or two in advance. The color deepens as it sets, plus the consistency is more creamy.

Yes as stated above I was going to offer the advice of buying Americolor and if that isn't doable to start with a deep pink icing and then add your red coloring to it. But if you HAVE to use Wilton colors make sure you get the NO TASTE red. Also be advised that Red and Black stain BADLY!!! People will have red teeth for a few hours lol

well, not true.
If you only use one tub of the red, it will stay dark pink. However, if you use 4-5 (tubs), you'll get a nice, deep, true red. (the roses in my photos on the wedding cake were done with a double batch of royal icing and about 5 tubs of Wilton No Taste Red. THAT was an adventure, as I'd never used the red before, and didn't realize that I wouldnt' have enough. Made an emergency run to Walmart at 1 in the morning, as the cake was due the next day! I bought every Red they had... just in case. icon_razz.gif)

So it's possible... just always have more red than you imagine you'd ever need, and you'll be good. I can't wait to try the Americolor!

I use nothing but Wilton for all of my coloring. I don't think that I even had to add the whole container, maybe half.

Does the Americolor have a bad taste to it?
