Customer asked me to make a communion cake for her daughter to match the napkines and plates. Below is the design she sent me. The cake is baked and I cut it into the "arc" shape and plan to make it look exactly like the picture using a template and my airbrush. However, I'm not sure of the best way to achieve the look of the gold "lead" between the panes....anyone have any suggestions? She's picking it up at 4:30 this afternoon, so I've got time!

Could you just pipe the "lead" on, then paint it with Gold Sparkle Dust?

Stain glass came is actually dark grey in colour. So you can just apply is in rolled fondant coloured dark and then brush a gold luster dust.
Or you can colour the fondant a dark yellow to resemble a golden colour and then brush with luster dust. I would just piece it together as they would in stained glass and make sure the joints are visible so that it looks sauldered like the real thing. A little bump at each joint but a smooth bump.
Good luck and it will definitely be a pretty cake.

The bright gold "highlighter" luster dust works perfectly for that color or effect if you mix with a little alcohol and paint it. That is going to be a beautiful cake! I cannot wait to see it.

If I let the buttercream crust over real well and then pipe on a bead of royal, would the royal set-up enough so that I can then paint it with luster dust? I know royal and buttercream don't go well, but what do you think? Customer does not want any fondant anywhere on the cake.....in my area I can't GIVE AWAY fondant! thumbsdown.gif

I think your bead of royal will set up fine...or you can just dust the crusted BC dry. It won't be quite as shiny, but will still look nice.

Thank you all for your suggestions.....however, my airbrush template didn't work, so I just piped everything in buttercream. I'm finishing it up now and will post a pic as soon as it's done! Thank you, again!
