"May not be used to purchase shipping cards, gift cards, gift certificates, in-store parties, class fees or Wilton course kits."

Yes. And Michaels usually has great discounts on the courses, either 50% off or buy the kit get the class free; now they haven't head much of these promotions. This month's discount is only 30%.

I haven't seen that on the coupon but I will be sure to look at it this weekend. I always suggest my students buy their kits with coupons, so I'll have to see about this.

Michaels' Wilton Course Prices went up in Feb from $25 to $30. They've come out with different promotions as well. You will see 30%, 40% and 50% off as well as buy the class get the kit for a penny.

Michaels still offers Bounce Back coupons so when you go from C1 to C2 and C2 to C3 and C3 to the F/GP course you will get an additional $5 off the promotion.

This is the promotions for the upcoming months:
June - 30% off or $21
July - Buy class ($30) get the kit for a penny
August - 30% or $21
September - 50% or $15
October - 40% or $18

OH wow! When did they decide to make the class prices higher!? I am a little dissapointed. icon_sad.gif When I worked there not to long ago they were the $25! Now they aren't even having good discounts?! This is crazy! I guess I will have to go a month they have a good discount now. Wilton is going to see that this will effect class attendents during certain months. icon_sad.gif

This is decided by Wilton AND Michaels. From my understand they were trying to make the classes fit in price wise with the other classes offered at Michaels.

The change happened in Feb.

This month's promotion makes the class $5.25 each lesson. Not a bad deal to me, but maybe I'm baised about it.

If you take the Scrapbooking classes they are $5 a night plus supples and other items. The One Stroke classes are $20 a lesson plus supplies.

Well thank goodness the coupons don't restrict the purchase of the Wilton cake decorating caddies -the "mother" caddy is over $100 -so it's a good use for the % off -and who couldn't use more cake decorating supplies icon_wink.gif

as an instructor i welcome the price of classes going up. perhaps finally wmi will get a pay raise, its been the same for the past 10 yrs ive been teaching. anyway, the reason why i think they should cost more is students dont take the classes seriously, what are they loosing if they miss class. of course there are the dedicated decorators who want cake and more cake, love those students. For 8 hours of class time it is really really cheap.

I don't know of ANY classes for ANY subject matter that are $5.25 a class. I still think folks get a pretty darn good deal for the money paid.....I guess there are folks that will complain no matter what. icon_sad.gif

You know what! You are right sweetcakes! I forgot as an instructor you guys don't get paid your time you put in! I have a dear friend from when I worked there and I know she will be happy to get that raise! and there are a lot of people that PAY and DON'T come! Like they forgot they are taking a real class!? icon_surprised.gif Thanks for setting me straight. tapedshut.gif I am not going to complain anymore. icon_biggrin.gif

I agree that many students don't take things seriously when the class was only $15, so maybe the Wilton method will actually get through to the students who slack.

Thanks for that info on the class discounts, Texas.

And I'm glad I'm not one of those people Quad. icon_wink.gif

As a WMI for Hobby Lobby we get paid 30 per class. If there is 4-6 students and that doesn't even cover cost of our supplies that is needed for the classes. Now the Fondant and Gumpaste classes will cost even more than the other 3 courses put together. BUT I love teaching. So I try not to look at my $ loss. Just want others to love the sugar art like I do.

In reality, cake decorating classes are very expensive. It's just that we've been spoiled by Wilton into thinking that they shouldn't cost us more than $15-20 a pot.

I think it will have a positive effect on everything; I'm not so concerned with the price going up for the actual class, but rather that the kits (which have gone up too) are now going to be pretty expensive, maybe even more so than buying everything individually.

I think it will have an effect on those who've taken the classes before, but for those who have not, they will see CD as an expensive hobby that must be taken seriously.

Wilton's classes are comparatively affordable, and the fact that they will go up slightly, I think, will have a good effect on everything (except your wallet icon_razz.gif).

I think I was thinking about the wallet thing too! icon_razz.gif I was soo used to not paying anything! (I forgot to add) I didn't count towards my instructor cause I worked there. That was one of my benefits She benefitted from my mom being a student. Now I will get to make my contribution!

I didn't realize that the class kits were going up too! But, now I have everything...it doesn't matter. The classes are SO worth every penny for me to do a hobby I love. icon_biggrin.gif

It doesn't really matter that the cost of the course went up by 5 bucks because every month there is a promotion, and since we hand out the Bounce Back coupons for courses 2, 3, and F&GP, there's only gonna be a dollar or two difference.

About the coupons, this is ultimately going to bite Michaels in the butt, at least where there are Hobby Lobby stores in that area. Michaels accepts competitor coupons, so either students will buy their kits with the bimonthly Hobby Lobby 40% off coupon at Michaels, or they'll just buy their kits at Hobby Lobby.

Right now, the cashiers at our store haven't paid any attention to the changes in the exclusions listed on the coupons, so it hasn't affected any of my students yet. We have many Hobby Lobby stores in Houston, though, including two that are within 5 minutes of the two Michaels stores at which I teach, so I hope Michaels does take a hit on course kit sales and changes that exclusion.

All things considered, the Wilton courses are still dirt cheap compared to other non-Wilton cake courses.

The reason I never took a class via Michaels from Wilton is because I thought the price was like $20.00 per night instead of $5.25 plus supplies.

When I finally got the nerve up to take a class, I was completely-totaly surprised that it was a cheap as it was for four classes. Now the kits and extras drained the bank account, but most of that was taken care of with coupons.

I for one am happy that there is a class out there that is still (IMO) relatively inexpensive. I only wish the classes were more often to cover more than just the basics. I would pay a little more to have more time with an instructor.

Cakepro -

Michaels accepts Hobby Lobby 40% coupons?

I didn't know that... Michaels only puts out a 40% coupon every other week... Sometimes Hobby Lobby has 40% coupons every week depending on what they want to promote!

If that is the case, I will take my HL coupon to Michaels from now on... I'm lucky though... I have a Michaels and a Hobby Lobby across the street from one another. thumbs_up.gif

Yes, Michaels accepts competitors' coupons - but only those printed in the newspaper or magazines - NOT the ones printed off of the Internet, such as from Hobby Lobby's website. They only accept coupons that are for one single item that is not on sale. The "40% off ALL Wilton products" coupon that HL recently had would not have been honored at Michaels, but the "40% off one single non-sale item" is supposed to be honored. The real challenge is usually getting a cashier that actually KNOWS Michaels accepts competitors' coupons!

so you only make $30 for the whole course?!?! all four nights, and two hours each night? or you get $30 per night of the course? if its the first, then thats outrageous! only 3.75 per hour! i don't think the discount in supplies would even make up for that.

This will depend on your store. My store will accept the ones printed from the internet. I just used one this week. My store will also give your the 50% or 40% off all Wilton if you bring a copy of the HobbyLobby ad in, or in the case of this week 30% off all Wilton.

I had even asked the manger on duty about it this week because I was going to tell my students about the ad, but I only had one copy. You have to bring a copy of the ad per person so the cashier can staple it to their adjustment sheet (the sheet they have you sign and add your zipcode to.)

LOL, nobody would teach if we only got 30 bucks for the entire course. The pay is $120 for the 4-part course ($30 per class) for up to 6 students. At Michaels, each student after #6 is an additional $10 per night. I forgot Hobby Lobby's rate of pay for more than 6 students.

Nobody could live off of these wages but it makes for a little pocket change. I teach 7 courses per month so I buy cake toys without feeling guilty. icon_biggrin.gif

Actually 7-9 is $10 more a night, each student after 10 is $3.

It's nice pocket change, but certainally not anything that can pay the bills. Plus 95% of what you see the instructor bring and use in class comes from his/her pocket.

Hmm, well, the paperwork I have is incorrect then. I thought it was weird that it went up so much per person.

Aren't you a lucky girl to have a store manager so liberal with the coupons! I intend to find the corporate policy for coupon usage sometime this week so I can take full advantage of whatever the policy is. I would imagine, though, that it's ultimately up to the store manager's discretion for their store as to what they will or won't do.
