If you don't have any equipment, you can start with some basics:

there is a starter set of decorator tips in a box that has a good variety
some parchment cones - or disposable icing bags
OR 2-3 regular icing bags.
a Wilton yearbook for pictures, instructions and ideas
a set of icing colors, Americolor gels are better than Wilton, but Wilton will work if that is all you can get.

good luck.

do you have no supplies at all?
i would get the wilton 1 cake kit even if you don't take the course. it comes with a spatula, a few tips, bags, couplers, practice board and flower nail. use the 40% off coupon, and its a really good deal. i would also get some icing colors, at least the basic ones and then you can mix your own. wilton's $12 turntable is a good thing to start with too. i've loved having a turntable for my cakes! oh, and of course some pans if you don't have those either. happy mothers day to you!

My first purchase was the wilton 101 piece set/caddy. It came with a ton of stuff. I've built it up from there. I do agree that the americolor are easier to work with than the wilton colorings.

first make sure they have 40% off cupon from Michales then get the 101 piece caddy, it will have just about everything you need for all three wilton classes. (even if you don't take the classes you will use just about everything in it)

You can get the flier out of the paper or the Michael's where I go allows you to sign your name and they will give you the coupon.

I think that Michael's will have an add starting on Sunday. They have them every other week in the summer.

a turntable definately makes decorating easier. If youre starting from nothing, Id say the 1st essentaials would be a couple tips- star, rose, writer, and leaf to start, I rarely use any other ones. some good bags, i find most of the ones they sell are annoying so i usually prefer to use the clear plastic disposable or parchment triangles, then you dont even need to use couplers. a large offset spatual for frosting the cake. a rose nail and a lifter to pick it up with, a good instructive book that will show you step by step how to do things, some wax paper to practice on, and something safe to keep it all in, so youre tips dont get bent up
