I add a little bit more salt than it asks for, not much and it's perfect.

Good Luck!

Do you think this recipe will work with part butter and part crisco? I hate the taste of the wilton buttercream, so I think this might taste similar.

I use salted butter and crisco in my butter cream and it is not too sweet.

Adding more meringue powder won't make much of a difference in the crusting. You have to be careful, though, as too meringue powder can sometimes result in more air bubbles or a "frothy" consistency in your icing.

I agree - half butter/half crisco is much tastier than the Wilton all shortening class buttercream. Yecch! I use salted butter when I make it, btw. It is a bit softer than all shortening buttercream.

My favourite icing is to mix equal parts butter/crisco buttercream with IMBC. Beautiful consistency, light, not as sweet taste, not as "greasy" as IMBC can be on its own.

(Edited for clarity)

This recipe is the best I have ever had. I also add a bit more salt to it. I use 1/2 butter and 1/2 crisco and I can't stop eating it when I am decorating... icon_eek.gif
