Hello ...
I have a wedding cake order for a couple weeks from now. The bride wants the fondant to be tinted a very deep blue. It's a 4-tier cake, with the bottom tier being 16 inches, so that's A LOT of kneading!!! Here's my question ... can I use petal dust mixed with clear alcohol to "paint" the fondant once it's on the cake? That seems so much easier than the hours it will take to knead all of that color into all of those pounds of fondant. At Sugarcraft's website, they have FDA-approved coloring dusts that I believe can be used on icing that will be eaten. Has anyone ever used those particular dusts? Any help/advice from anyone would be greatly appreciated! I apologize in advance if these questions have been answered somewhere else ...
Thanks!!!! ![]()
You might want to warn the bride of the 'blue effect' - she may change her mind. [I have a vison of kids collecting uneaten fondant on plates and lots of tongues stuck out - LOL]
Place your fondant in your mixer with the dough hook attachment. Works great!!!
You can get tinted blue fondant as well at Pfeil and Holing

Thanks for your responses. I tried to talk the bride out of dark blue fondant, and warned her about blue tongues, lips, fingers, etc. Still, she has her heart set on this. I checked out the SatinIce and CalJava blue-colored fondant, and unfortunately, neither of them are the right blue.
I'm still wondering if anyone has used the Crystal Colors FDA-approved dusts. Supposedly, they are safe to put on fondant that will be eaten. I'm just not sure if mixing them with lemon extract and painting them on fondant will give me the desired look. Maybe I'll order a container of the dust and try it. Otherwise, I guess I'll try the dough hook to mix the color into the fondant (thanks for that tip, loriemoms!)!!
