My BIL's birthday party is Sunday and I don't have a clue what to do. It will be a small sheet cake. I'm not sure if I want to do a theme or just a simple "manly" look. He is into a lot of things sports: turkey hunting, socor..., also he just became a baptist minister. I had also thought of doing chocolate buttercream with chocolate covered strawberries but then I run into not all the family liking chocolate!!!

Any ideas??

It's hard to suggest things when I don't know your brother in law, but perhaps if you focus on one thing he really enjoys (soccer, hunting or some other single sport) you might have an inspiration. Too many ideas can be just as stifling as too few!

When I'm baffled and feel overwhelmed by the choices here, I use google images and just type +soccer +cake and see what comes up.

Best wishes,
Christy

How about an open Bible? A soccor ball? I saw an awesome deer head cake that I am going to do for my brother in July.

How about a white buttercream with basketweave on the sides and chocolate covered strawberries on top?

What about a black shirt shape with a white collar

I am sure he probably has a preference. Maybe a specialty cake like German Chocolate or Lemon Supreme or something like that (check with your sis). I would do a specialty cake with some nice borders and just write Happy Birthday on top. Guys are hard to make cakes for, they mostly just care that it doesn't look girly and it tastes really good. My DH's favorite is Dark Chocolate Fudge cake with Raspberry filling and Ganache topping.
OR
Unless your sis says he would really like a cake that represents all of his favorite activities. You could make or buy decorations and place them in each corner or section of the cake maybe like a quilt with something that represents all the things he enjoys doing.

Maybe the inscription on the cake could be: "Happy Birthday to the Man of Many Talents!" - maybe that sounds to silly I don't know I always try to come up with something original.

Good luck let us know what you do and tell us when you post the picture. Take CARE!! I hope this helps. icon_biggrin.gif

P.S. I wouldn't worry about what everyone might like I would just find out his favorite because after all it is all about him

Julie, thanks! I'll check with her about the specialty cake. If all else fails I think I'm going to stick with an edible image. My problem is that they live far away from us and we don't get to see them much or talk, so I don't have much to go on.
