I was wondering, I see all these wonderful cakes here. Are you all doing cakes everyday? Or do you own a / work in a barkery? I am a WMI and would love to be even half as good as some of you all out there. Do I need to be doing cakes every day?

So in short my question is how often do you practice your cake craft?

I'd love to be able to do it more, however it's only a hobby, it is very time consuming, and when I don't 'have' to make a cake for an occasion, I can go weeks without doing one. Although when I do, I absolutely love it!

I go weeks without doing one too. I just do them for family & friends. The last 2 cakes I did were at Easter. Now in the next 2 weeks I have my DS bday, BestFriend bday, parents anniversary, Niece graduation, Mom's Day. I'm gonna be a cake making fool OH BOY! icon_smile.gif I do wish I did more cakes a week. I need more practice!

I only get to do cakes around family birthdays I would love to do it for a living or at a shop. I think cake decorating is so FUN and seeing the smileing icon_lol.gif faces of the people you do cakes for is awsome makes you feel GREAT!

Once the wedding seasons starts (uh ....2 days from now!), I do a wedding cake (or two) almost every weekend until fall. In March and April, I had only one wedding so I spent that time creating some new display cakes on styrofoam.

A lot less since I quit Publix this past Christmas. When I was there, I was decorating 40+ cakes a day. Since I quit and had my double carpal tunnel surgery, I've only done a couple cakes. I'm getting ready to do several for family birthdays in the next couple months, and I'm really looking forward to doing them! I do miss doing cakes sometimes, but I DON'T miss doing the insane +# I had to do at the bakery - I always felt I couldn't put as much time into them as I liked AND since most of the designs were standard per the toy kits we sold, I didn't really get to use my creativity. I'd much rather do fewer cakes and really be able to use my skill and time and creativity! icon_biggrin.gif

Ever since the $10,000 fine was implanted for those who aren't legal, I haven't sold any more cakes. I get on here every night and sometimes, I don't even feel like a baker/decorator.
But... I always give cakes for Mother's Day and my oldest daughter expects a "Welcome Home" party (She's away on a college internship.), so I can practice my skills once again!

Hehe, crazy, huh? And I was considered "slow"! icon_lol.gif I was supposed to be working up to being able to do twice that number - That's getting the cake out of the freezer, filling and assembling them, icing and decorating, and then packaging. Plus waiting on customers, taking phone orders, cleaning and filling the cases, cleaning up at the end of the day.... I'm so glad I'm outta there, less than 6 min per cake to do all of that is just ridiculous - but that's how they're able to charge so little for their cakes!
