I've got an order for a LotR cake for next week for a 10yo boy. She wants a 10" cake for that...pretty much whatever I can come up with, I think. She was going to ask her dad (the boy's grandfather) if he could write out "happy birthday" in elvish. That would be really cool to have as the message...

Anyway, I have a few ideas of my own but wonder if maybe others have made LotR cakes before or have ideas that I haven't thought about.

TIA icon_smile.gif

Since it's for a boy you could do something volcano-ish since they throw the ring into the mountain of fire at the end. You could put some little hobbity guys trying to make it up the mountain. You could add Gollum too.

There is an INSANE LOTR cake here:

not saying you'll want to go that nuts, but its an interesting see anyways. I saved it a while back so I hope the link still works. icon_smile.gif

ETA: Yep, it works.

hehe, that one that looks like the ring itself is one idea I had going through my mind. icon_lol.gif

I was just thinking that that could be what I do on the sides and then have some type of scene on the top. Since it's for a friend I really could go all out if I wanted because I wouldn't feel bad for putting some extra work into it for the same price (especially since I'm a LorR fan icon_razz.gif )

Did they give you any indication of his favorite character?

That would really help, there are so many things you could do with knowing that! Depending if the liked, the elves or the knights or whatever. So many options if you could at least narrow it down an bit.
But since you said they want to write it in elvish, maybe that's the hint.

Elves Race:

this is kind of cute Lego's for kids:

Or just do a search on Google for LOR Elves

What a neat idea!

Good Luck

Awesome image for airbrushing if you have it.

I have an elaborate receipe for a LOTR cake - it's called "Lord of the Ring Dings" It was made by a pastry chef from NY and they came up with this cake. However, I don't think a 10 year old would like it too much - It's a great recipe though!

mmm. sounds yummy, please share even if she can't use it. icon_smile.gif Ring Dings....

Anyways, I LOVE the idea of using the ring cake and then doing a scene on top. Sounds like something a LOTR fan would go nuts for!

question is, what scene?? icon_surprised.gif

There are so many awesome scenes in that movie...do Hobbiton or Treebeard or Lothlorien or Rivendell or minas tirith or...wow, the possibilities are endless...

We vote for a Rivendell scene, perhaps the castle. Or the final big battle? Helms Deep? Or just some of the major characters sitting on the rim of the ring?

Time to bust out the luster dust! Well, that would be cool, but I don't know for something that big if it would have the same effect. Does it coat evenly? On Ace of Cakes, they were spraying something big silver from a can, perhaps they have a gold?

Ooh Lego LOTR! That would be cool, too! Esp. for a 10 yr old!

Hi LaSombra, have you decided on the cake yet? There aren't many on here are there? But what about this? I would love an excuse to try this one, you could still have the writing around the outside like you were talking about... http://cakecentral.com/modules.php?name=gallery&file=displayimage&pid=204193

The episode of Ace of Cakes last night, Duff used a LOT to cover an entire tree, so that answers the question if it can be used to cover a large area. Have you picked anything yet? I'd love to see the pictures. The link above it cute, too! I'm personally not good at modeling.

That is so cute! I don't know if I'd do a very good job on the figures like that...Gimli looks especially good on that cake. They got the beard perfecticon_razz.gif

I'm thinking I might just pipe on the top but keep the ring like that. The ring looks like it's been painted with luster dust like I've been thinking.

Another thing I am thinking to do and should probably start on it soon is modelling Aragorn's sword. http://www.tolkientown.com/popup_image.php/page/1/pID/1771

I don't think it would be as hard as figure modelling since it's mostly straight lines and such...

yeah, I saw that Duff episode last night and that tree was coolicon_smile.gif It wasn't meant to be eaten though...do you think the luster dust would taste gross covering the sides of a cake like that??

I'd ask the person who made the ring cake here on CC and ask her if it changed the taste.

If you're concerned about taste (and who knows, even health effects if you've been reading the posts on gold paint) you could always sculpt the ring out of beigy/yellow and once the writing is drawn on just highlight it with gold dust? You would need to use a ton of gold dust otherwise and that stuff is expensive!

Yeah, I was thinking just to dust it on in the end like blush...just enough to give it a little sparkleicon_smile.gif
