I am making a 9/13 choc cake for my husbands work but don't really want to use 2 cake mixes. I am thinking about using one of the cake extenders on this site. Has anybody used them and which one do you use and did you like it. I noticed one uses more sugar and sour cream. The other uses less sugar, no sour cream but only 1/2 box pudding mix. ...Any body??

I use the one with sour cream almost every time I bake a cake, and everyone has always loved it! Good luck!

I prefer the one with the sour cream. Makes the cake moist and tasty!

I tried the one with sour cream....and personally I didn't like the sour taste it gave the cake. But I AM picky!

The extender recipe that I use is this:

1 cup All purpose flour
3/4 granulated sugar
2/3 milk
2 sticks softened salted butter
1 tsp baking powder.

I love it because it doesn't totally add a new taste to the cake like the sour cream or yogurt recipes do. But I also prefer cakes without a real strong flavor other than yellow or chocolate.

I use the one with the cup of sugar, flour and sour cream. I then add half a box of pudding. I have gotten nothing but rave reviews for this combination.

So far, the one that has worked the best for me on a chocolate cake is this one:

http://www.cakecentral.com/cake_recipe-2322-86-White-Almond-Sour-Cream-Cake.html

I substitute the almond extract with more vanilla.
I personally do not like the recipes that call for pudding. But, that is just me. I have printed a bunch of chocolate cake recipes, even some scratch but I have not had time to try each one of them. I looking for one that I will totally love. icon_smile.gif

I used this one also, because I had no sour cream, and it worked great! It didnt alter the taste at all and it wasnt dry!!!

Well I made my cake with the 1 cup of flour, 1 cup sugar, 1/2 cup sour cream, 1 pkg pudding mix and the extra egg. The batter tasted good but since I won't get to try it I will have to ask my hubby how it was....Thanks for all the advice...

I raise my hand for sour cream. Everyone asks me what I do to my cakes to make them so moist and make them taste so good. They never believe I use a mix. I'd like to make them think it's my secret ingredients but I always tell the truth about the extender recipe. icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

well....actually, when I made it, I used the plain yogurt instead of sour cream....and it had a definite sour taste (like plain yogurt does). I can only imagine how the sour cream must taste.

Is the yogurt much different than the sour cream?

I don't know.....maybe I'm just picky!

I have used the extender from this site for yellow cake and the taste is fabulous. I will also try the other recipes given in response to your question. Thanks!
