i am trying to make a racing flag and i need to colour fondant black. i have never used fondant before so i just bought wilton(nobody will be eating it anyway) icon_razz.gif just for decoration on the cake board. anyway was wondering how i should go about it. i know i need to do a bit at a time and let it rest and it will get darker but should i start with brown or something first, i think i once read on here some start with brown so they dont waste all their black cause im using wilton(dont have americolor around here)and it takes alot of colour to even get buttercream to go black and i have to let it rest for a day or so as well for it to darken, or is there a better way of getting it jet black.

I must admit that when I am using black fondant I buy it already coloured, otherwise I end up settling with dark grey as I get fed up icon_cry.gif .

Sorry it doesn't really help you but gives you a bump.

do you have an airbrush or have access to the Wilton color spray? That or pre-colored is about the only way I know to get truly black fondant.

I tried to color mmf black yesterday and it took so much coloring and so much kneading. I was told that Dutch Processed Cocoa will turn your fondant black and it supposedly tastes good too. My SIL bought some for me for Christmas and I put it up in the pantry and forgot about it. I guess I will try it out next time. My experience with using another color to darken it first has been bad. It always seems to have a tint of the color that I used to start with. I am not sure how black can have any kind of tint, but if it is weird I can usually pull it off.
