One of my friends called for a rush order for a communion cake. She had never had one of my cakes and I was a bit worried about her liking it.

This was her review...how would you take it? I've never had anyone comment that my icing was too sweet... icon_confused.gif

...."It was delicious and very well received. The strawberry filling helped take the edge off of some of the sweetness of the icing."

I would say it was a great review I agree a fruit filling does take the edge off the frosting and the 2 blend very nicely I like rasberry or apricot with buttercream

it was a true review but she just needed a different word. complemented??? not sure what word is better

Yeah I wouldn't worry about it. Most frosting is sweet. Thats the way it is. Some people don't like it, some people don't have to eat it. She was probably meaning that she liked the combo because with it she COULD eat it where she normally wouldn't have.

I would have to agree that it was a great review! To me the emphasis would have to be 'It was very delicious.....'. thumbs_up.gif

I wouldn't get to upset about it. Several people in my family thinks buttercream icing is too sweet, while others think its just right. just a matter of opinion. i think the cake looks great.

I think it was a great review. She may like for her frostings to be real sweet, and couldn't come up with any other way of putting it and didn't want to offend, which it sounds like she didn't. I would call it a compliment, for sure, and now a little insight as well. but definitely not criticism.

I had been doing cakes for almost a year before my sister told me that one of her coworkers wanted me to do a cake, but was there a way to tone down the sweetness of the frosting. i had no idea it was so sweet, as that is what i'm accustomed to and nobody had ever complained. i wasn't the least bit offended, and now i always have the option of offering a sweet buttercream, or less sweet (i.e. more buttery than sugary).

The cake, btw, is beautiful!

I agree....I've gotten a lot of "the icing is soooo sweet" lately! Makes me wonder if people know there's sugar in cake icing!

I think it was a compliment. She didnt say "your icing was too sweet and the filling took the edge off"

I wouldn't be bothered with it. I find most BC's to be overly sweet. I spent all last week messing around with the BC Dream recipe and the BC with butter (for decorators) recipe in attempts to make it less sweet. I even tried the merengue butter creams (ick). Anyway....I eventually became satisfied when I replaced 2 tablespoons of milk with a vanilla flavored creamer. Made a huge difference.
Don't let it bother you. It's just the nature of icing.
