I been asked to do a birthday cake for a man who is really into weight lifting. His girlfriend thought it would be cool to have the cake look like barbells--cake on 2 ends supported by a rod. How would I get round cakes to stand on the sides? The rod I thought I would do in either PVC pipe or thick wood dowel covered in grey fondant. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated ![]()
Well one option would be to use the smushing of the cake to create a visual effect. cover the cake board in fondant and airbrush or color the fondant grey to resemble cement. place the cake on the fondant and use a toothpick to etch cracks into the fondant around the area where the cake touches the fondant. It will look like the barbell has cracked through the cement floor.
Thanks for the suggestion! I think that would add some character to the cake as well
Reviving this post---What would anyone use as the "bar" between the sets of "weights"? I was thinking of PVC pipe covered in a grey fondant or even Rice Krispie treat covered in grey fondant.
** NCbert: I would love to see your picture of your barbell cake---this one is very challenging

either would work ---
tho' the rice krispies will need an internal support to (duff's fav. choice: copper tubing)
Im doing a test run of this cake on Wed. I think I'm going to use the PVC tubing, a 8" ,6" & 4" round pound cakes as the weights, covered in chocolate frosting tinted black---Keep your fingers crossed!!
Thanks Marcbolin for the sketch--that's my guide
