Have any of you ever tried leveling a cake with thread. If not, you need to. A lady here in town that does wedding cakes gave me this pointer. It is so much easier than using the cake leveler. As soon as you take the cake out of the oven, cut a piece of thread wider than the cake pan, start at one end and stretch the thread across the pan, work the thread from side to side along the edges of the pan with it pulled tight across the cake and just work it toward. After you have cut the top off I use a spatula to lift the cut part of the cake off because it is very hot.

Using this technique is alot easier for me and your cake will be the 2" or 3"(whatever the pan size is) height that you want and level.

If you haven't tried this please do I think you will like it. Everyone has been so nice on this site so I thought I would share this with you. I had never heard of doing this.

Hope I didn't confuse anyone.

I use that method all the time. It just came to me even before I got into cake decorating. I bought a leveler and really didnt like it, so back to the thread I went. I works for me!!

I recently tried the thread.....loved it. My knife was getting dull so I figured I'd give it a whirl. Worked great. Cheap too! icon_smile.gif

really - I don't own a leveler so I always freeze then use a serrated knife - I think I'll like the thread option better!!!

OH I always want to try and torte a cake, so what's the best way to cut the cake then? I mean don't you bake one cake and cut it in 3 different layers to put filling in?

I used the Thread to torte. I was so nervous to get an even cut. Worked fantastic.

I'll have to give it a try.........I've been taking the lazy way out of leveling my cakes........as soon as they come out of the oven I stick a cookie sheet over top of the cake and push down and stick some cans on it to hold it down for a few minutes......this pushes the cake down to the level of the cake pan (instead of cutting some off) and it works really well....then when I take off the cookie sheet......my cake is perfetly level and there are no cut edges to worry about crumbs.......the only thing is does is it makes the cake a little less fluffy and a little more dense, still moist and yummy though...and I tend to do a lot of carved cakes anyhow so this method works really well for me!

Hi, thanks for the tip. Sounds easy enough. I'm kinda new to this, can't wait to try it out. Where in Mississippi are you from? I'm also in Mississippi. Love your cakes, great work.

I like my leveler, but I've done the thread trick, too. I'd suggest using waxed dental floss instead of thread though. And it works on cakes that aren't warm. Frozen can be done, but it is a little tougher to do.

I've never tried this but read it somewhere. You still use a thread to level the cake but use legos to get the right height. Make two equal stacks of legos and twirl the thread or tie it around the lego block. ...maybe put another lego on top to sandwich the thread in there?? Then slide back and forth to level cake. You could also use this method to torte the cake. I've never tried it, but my kids have about a million legosicon_smile.gif

Hopefully I wasn't too confusing!

OH legos= what a great idea!
My kids aren't old enough for the little legos but they have the mega blocks I'll have to see how tall they are next to a cake!
