I need to create a two tier Papillon theme cake. Its french for butterfly but is actually a toy breed dog as well.

Since I'm bringing this to a Papillon club meeting it needs to incorporate either butterflies (I don't have rice paper.. ugh) or papillons. I'd like it to be elegant... delicate.... so I'm thinking that FBCT would be too 'heavy, bold, chunky...' I'm trying to find the right words...

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

You can make butterfies out of colorflo. Instead of filling them in completely maybe you can do a filigree design?

There are also some really pretty cakes I have seen here with butterflies made of royal icing. Very delicate looking.

You could make marzipan in a color that contrasts with the buttercream, cut out silhouettes either of an entire Papillon dog or just the head, and press them into the sides of the tiers. Or alternate dog silhouettes with butterfly silhouettes.

Oooohh! I like the filigree idea...

Hmm.. I'm thinking of taking small paw prints and have it spiral up the cake.. and then at the top have a small flower with colorful filigree butterflies...

More whimsical than what I first thought of.. but should be nice! Now should I do the butterflies out of royal icing, FBCT or try my hand at chocolate? Decisions Decisions Decisions.

Thanks everyone.
(I hate when I get stuck. I couldn't really visualize anything last night.)

You can get the rice paper ones already done from www.Sugarcraft.com or www.Berylscakes.com

you could also do the filigree butterflies out of chocolate - they have a very delicate look and if you used white chocolate you could brush them with luster dust
