Ok so I get a phone call from my husbands ex-wife
(long story dont ask) who asked me to do a cake for one of her customers. She barley knows the guy but he is a loyal customer who comes in all the time. He has no family here and his wife died 20 years ago. He is turning 88 years old. Here is the kicker......she wants it for Monday. ![]()
Now I have no problem doing this cake last minute. But she told me to use my imagination as she doesnt care what it looks like. He was in the Military for WWII and Vietnahm (sp) lived through the big band era etc.
I HAVE NO IMAGINATION!!!!!HELP ![]()
Any ideas you have for this guy would help.
I want it to look good and be cool, cuz I am trying to get my name out there to start a business. ![]()

so many possibilities --
a "medal" of some sort -- plays on military, could be for longevity, surviving, etc.
a piece of sheet music ...such as the song "As Time Goes By" (fits the whole time period) (theme from Casablanca)
if have an edible image printer, could do a montage of images from the years of his life -- like the times square sailor kiss, a big band shot, etc. -- find all fun ones.
or even just a simple cake w/ message...
88 -- still doing great
Well if he still listens to the big band type music, I would prolly go with that theme. Reason being is my dad is a Vietnam vet and he would rather forget about it. Just a thought though, some people are different. But if you do the big band thing, you could cut out different instruments out of fondant to place on the cake and some music notes??=) JMHO, GL! Jen
Big band is also known as the Swing Era. Frank Sinatra, Doris Day, Benny Goodman, The Dorsey Brothers, Kay Kyser and His College of Musical Knowledge, to name a few.
I would go white with black silhouettes from the Swing/Big Band era. The silhouettes can be done in FBCT or fondant.
Big Band/Swing has been a favorite genre of music in my family for 3 generations.

I was thinking of doing big band or swing with some chocolate transfers, I wanted to do a chocolate transfer of that iconic 40's pin-up girl, You know the one red bathing suit, blond hair. couldnt find a pic of her anywhere at Barnes and Noble. Saw a pic of Rosie the Riviter and was thinking of maybe doing that. There are tons of possibilities that my head swims and now I have to find the pics on the comp.
That's Betty Grable. My dad had one of those.

I think a pin up girl or Rosie the Riveter sounds wonderful. I hope you find a picture. Good luck!
I found this one, not really clear, but it's kind of a start.
