Do I Need A Dowel For A 6" Top Layer?
Decorating By mbalis Updated 12 May 2006 , 2:42pm by dsoutherngirl
I will be making a cake for a birthday in a couple weeks..it will be an 8" 2 layer square cake. I bought a 6" round pan, because it was so cute
I want to place that on top of the sqaure cake. Does that little cake need to be supported? I will probably just make one layer out of it. I'm off to bed but would love any advice!
I am so glad you asked this question!! I am going to do pretty much the same thing. I have a 10 round double layer and I am putting a six inch heart on top. I think I am going to double the heart though. Any suggestions??
TIA,
Charlotte
Just because I am paranoid and practice 'better safe than sorry' I would probably at least use some sturdy straws (McDonalds are really good) for the single layer. It would probably be ok without it but why take the chance?
For CharlieinMO, I would go ahead and dowel a 2 layer. I am always surprised at how heavy cakes get when you start adding layers and tiers.
That's my 2 cents. I am interested in seeing what others say because I have also wondered ... how heavy is too heavy.

Thank you very much. i will give them a try.
Thank you!

Dowel anything that has a top with two or more layers! I speak from experience!
Lollipop sticks or straws are fine for 6-inch cakes.
