Oh that is a nice cake!!!!

I worked with Satin Ice for the first time the other day...taste was nice and it was very soft. I think I still prefer FondX the best, maybe just because I'm used to it. I would say if I had to pick a second choice though it would be Satin Ice. Pettinice is not one of my favorites. Also I think FondX is slightly cheaper than Satin Ice.

Yay, happy to hear that you had good results. I have used their black fondant but on the dark blue cake show entry I tried CalJava's brand, nice but a bit soft. For white I love Fondx Virgin white. Also like Petinice chocolate fondant.

Lovely cake Misty, the colors are so pretty and just say springtime to me.

I to love satin ice, I was wondering where people orderd it though. I asked a local cake supply store here in the Seattle area and they quoted me $85.00 for a 20lb pail. that just seems high.

My local store didn't carry it so I asked the owner about it and she said she could get it but quoted me a terrible price. I told her I could get it online for much less and she told me she would match the price. Maybe you should try that tactic. icon_biggrin.gif

SATIN ICE RULES! lol - That's all I use - they even make colored fondant, and let me tell you, if you haven't tried it, you must! No more making black for me! The colored fondant they make rolls as beautifully as their white!

Oh - for those of you who don't know - Pfeil & Holing is an online store for professionals - they sell 20 lb tubs for only $53.80, and they sell all of the colors! Just a note on the pinks, blues, purples... they are TRUE colors! I ordered a small tub of pink and it is almost a hot pink. You only need a little to mix with the white to get pastels - much nicer than hand-tinting though as there is no mess. I used this methods for my sculptured ballet slipper I uploaded in bat mitzvahs.

you can order satin ice at www.cakesbysam.com--reasonable, I think...especially you can buy it already colored and it tastes good.

I just bought a small 2lb tub of white Satin Ice for $14. I haven't used it yet though. I'm used to making my own. MMF and a recipie from the Cake Bible.

Is it really worth paying that much when you can make your own for a fraction of the price?

It seems like the only advantage is that you are saving time not having to make it.

I have been to afriad to try to make MMF. Right now it is only for ease and time savings. I have never used Satin Ice before - but have seen lots of posts endorsing it. I checked out a few websites and the cakedeco.com is the cheapest FYI

That's almost twice as much as I can get it at my local cake supply store. Maybe check and see if they will order it for you?

I would bet that the high price from the place in Seattle is due to the shipping... I order mine direct from the manufacturer (and I suggest you all do the same icon_smile.gif) and with shipping to Alaska the cost is about $100 a bucket ($50 orig price). Your Seattle supplier is just trying to make a sliver of profit, and probably won't be able to match the other vendors' prices.

I prefer to buy mine for several reasons, one of which being that the Satin Ice is kosher parve. It is not a concern for me, but possibly for some of my customers.

Awesome job on the cake thumbs_up.gif satin ice is very easy to work with and yes it does smell like playdough. My customers are 50/50 some eat it some peel it off.

NOt trying to be a pain, but again to those who have used MMF and store bought Fondant.

In the end, is it worth buying Fondant, (Satin Ice) or taking the time, (hr or so) to make it for $3-5 a batch.

And yes the local cake supply store jacks the price up for everything. a 5lb bucket costs $31!!!! thumbsdown.gif

I don't like MMF so for me it is worth it. If you like MMF then why not stick with it.

I made MMF twice and both times it was not usable. Made RBC and it was greasy and gross, in my opinion. I prefer the taste of Satin Ice to MMF and RBC anyway. I can get a 2 lb bucket for $8.99 at my local cake shop. I think it is worth every penny.

$8.99!! icon_eek.gif If it was that much here, I would use it as well. I'm curious though, what does a 5lb tub cost you?
