If it is so soft, mushy and lacking elasiticity, what do I need to add?

I would flatten it some and sift over some more powdered sugar- alittle at a time.

emphasis on adding a little sifted sugar at a time. If you add to much sugar it will get to stiff and hard to work with.

If it lacks elasiticity, add some glycerine, glucose, or corn syrup (about 1 T. for every 4 cups of powdered sugar you used--add more if needed).

I would knead it with powdered sugar on the mat or even some cornstarch. A little at a time until you get the consistency you are looking for.
