Am invited to a Kentucky Derby party and since I won't know most of the people and want to bring something, I thought of just a 'hostess gift' for the host (which is one of my favorite bosses). Was thinking of maybe a cookie bouquet, but then that would mean several different types of cookies, colors, etc. Then thought of horseshoe cookies. What would all of you do? It sounds like I don't need to bring for the entire party, that's why I thought of just a hostess gift. Thank you for all suggestions!

When I think of the Kentucky Derby, I think of hats! Maybe a little tin of few different hat cookies?

I've made Kentucky Derby cookies before and it's alot of fun. If it's for a hostess gift and not for the entire party then I agree with fragglerock1, making up a variety of hats. You can make a nice assortment of hats with a variety of designs using a minimal amount of colors. Throw in a couple of horses too! Platter or cookie bouquet. Show off your work to everyone at the party!

I agree about the hats-and maybe some "mint juleps" Isn't that the drink of the derby?

That's so funny heidisuesmom! There's so much you can make for the Kentucky Derby!! For something simple it seems like making hats is the #1 choice. You can go nuts making SO many designs!! Oh yes yankeegal, mint juleps is definitely the drink of the derby. I did some but next time I'd make the cookies more in the shape of the glass.

I hail from Louisville and the Derby Festival is beginning to take full swing. We have many events that take place. Thunder over Louisville (awesome fireworks show over the city), Hot Air Balloon Race, Mini-Marathon, Great Steamboat Race, Pegasus Parade. I just started selling cookies. I can't believe the cutters I have been able to find. Jockey hat, jockey silk, pegasus, steamboat, even a firework. It's going to be so much fun. I have some photos of some of my practice cookies in my gallery. I suggest horses, horse shoe made to look like a garland of roses, hats, and roses. These are the ones everyone would be familiar with.

My mom for years has made rose candy - just rose molds w/ poured chocolate candy.... she doesn't sell them, but she's always given them out and it's been big.

I've seen jersey/jockey cookies - then you get to do lots of colors & designs - you could copy the designs from the actual jerseys - check out www.kentuckyderby.com . The hats are also a great idea - and you can always do horses of course icon_smile.gif

Oh...lhayes1976 and Imartsy....I miss Louisville so much especially at this time of the year. I loved going to the parties and getting to wear my "hat" to them. We thought about going for Thunder this year but I had to work....

Yes make hats, silks, horses, horseshoes ...a few of each and even the state of Kentucky with Louisville starred on it!

I made these last year for a Derby Silent Auction. But I would personally would make a tray of them to show off your work!
