Advice On Putting Color Flow On Buttercream
Decorating By JoJo4 Updated 26 Apr 2007 , 11:42am by springlakecake
So I have some color flow pieces to put on a cake frosted with buttercream. the wilton directions says that buttercream will break down the color flow. I will be attaching the decorations on friday, the cake will be eaten on Sunday (I have an all day event on Saturday so I can't do anything with the cake on Saturday.) What should i put between the cake and the color flow letters? suggestions from wilton (wax paper cut to make shape, marshmallows or sugar cubes) might not work cuz the letters aren't that thick and cutting out wax paper to match will be a pain, but I will do it.
Also, the outline piping is not very neat, any suggestions on how I can smooth it out? I have some left over color flow in the fridge, no clue if this is even reusable - could I brush a layer of color flow over the letters to blend so it's not so "piped" looking? any suggestions would be helpful, thanks.

Well I have put lots of royal and a couple of color flow things on buttercream before and I havent had a problem with it breaking down. but I dont think I have gone 2 days, maybe just 24 hours. They only thing I noticed with mine are some grease spots showing through, but it wasnt softened or breaking down. I dont think I would go to the trouble of backing it or anything. Can you just put the letters on last minute? I dont think the whole buttercream breaking down royal is as big as wilton makes it out to be, from my experience. But to be fair, I have seen some posts where people say it turns into a puddle. I dont know why it happens to some and not others.

I too wanted to know this. I plan on making graduation cupcakes iced in Buttercream, then making a 2007 ahead in either royal icing or color flow to be placed on top of the cupcake just before the party. Wondering which would be better, color flow or royal?
I've done a few cakes with colorflow pieces. My experience has been that if the piece is sitting for a while on the buttercream, it will absorb grease from the icing and it will darken the colors on the colorflor. I haven't had one break down though.
To sold the color issue, I keep the waxed paper on the back of the colorflow piece and put it on the cake that way. No one cuts through the colorflow piece when cutting the cake - it is always taken off, so the waxed paper is not a big deal.
When I did my course cake with color flow frogs, my instructor told us to make our color flow pieces in advance so they would be dry when we decorated the cake. I did mine four days ahead and served the cake the next day after decorating. Everything was fine. I think as long as your pieces are good and dry and your buttercream is crusted you should be fine. Heck, one of my frog's arm broke off and we put it back together with a little buttercream. Hope that helps!
I personally prefer chocolate transfers, then you dont have to worry at all!
I could have my sister put the letters on the cake Sunday before the party but I was going to pipe dots on to the letters using buttercream (they are suppose to look like lights - I'm doing a high school musical theme). I'm worried they will fall off the letters during transport. Hmmm not sure what to do. 2 days on a cake might not be good for the color flow. i'm not thrilled with the way the letters came out either, but it's too late to change now! thanks all for answring.
Would the chocolate transfers just be the Wilton candy melts made into a shape? Do you have to worry about hot weather with those?
Well you draw with the chocolate, I have quite a few in my gallery. You probably couldnt have them in extremely hot weather.
