Does anyone use the powdered food coloring? In BC in particular? Just wondering how well it works compared to the gels.

Well, I haven't used it yet. I did buy some and the lady told me that it would work just the same so I am hoping so!! icon_lol.gif And if I remember right I beleive I was told that it doesn't take quite as much but I would be interested to hear what the others have to say!

Just curious...where do you buy the powdered stuff from? I've never heard of it before. I would be interested in trying these as I find the wilton ones don't last. They dry up pretty quickly after opening.

I read online that it is quite potent so you wouldn't need much of the powdered stuff! I'll buy some and try it out!!

ps. lilscakes, I have never had the problem with the wiltno stuff drying out! I also find that I don't need very much of it to dye my icing. I've had bottles last over a year that have already been opened. hmmm....

What I found that worked best to keep my Wilton colors longer, was after opening take a square of wax paper place it over the top of the jar and then screw the lid on. It seems to act as a seal in keeping the colors moister longer.

When we had a local cake supply store, it carried the powdered colors. They work just the same as gels, but aren't quite as messy. And, yes, they don't require using as much color to get the shade you want. I can recall using Flamingo Red, Violet, and Brown quite regularly. The best part is that they keep forever. You don't have to worry about them drying out or getting to thick.

I have always wanted to try the powder colors also! I have seen Jacques Torres mix them with cocoa butter and use it to paint, that could be fun!

Thanks Mouse. I'll try your wax paper trick next time I open a new jar. Seems many of the colours thicken so they are useless after a very short time. Thanks for the tip.

I use the powdered food colouring to paint on fondant but haven't really tried it on buttercream yet!

good tip Mouse on using wax paper! It seems lately every time I open a used bottle of my wilton colours it has dried upicon_sad.gif

I'm going to have to look for the powdered colours... I hate getting the paste dyes on my hands... I've had mine last for a long time without drying out... I'm gonna try the wax paper out .. i wonder if plastic wrap would work too?????
Thanks for posting this... I would have never known about powders...

You definitely can also use plastic wrap, it fits a little better around the jar and the lid is easier to close.

I recommend the powdered colors, they are great! I just cut a slit in the covering on the jar and shake it out so I don't get too much at a time. The paste kind by Americolor is excellent as well, it now comes in a flip-top jar so you can just put in drops at a time! I don't use the Wilton unless I have to.

Lilscakes~ If your Wilton gel color is drying up you can add a drop or two of glycerin and your colors will be good as new.

Just a thought...

I saw on Ace of Cakes last night where they used the powdered colors to color chocolate clay so it wouldn't seize.

I plan to buy some next week when I go shopping. I really just want try some of the darker colors.
