I am having trouble with the letter cutouts for fondant. I seem to get the fondant stuck in the cutout. If I push it out with a small instrument, it wrecks the letter. I've tried powdered sugar too. Do I let it dry, before taking it out???

I would let the fondant dry just a little before you cut it. And then maybe some more after you cut before you move. I was reading yesterday that someone suggested using crisco on the cutter as it would make a smoother cut. I haven't tried it yet though. Maybe someone else can help!!

Hi,

I learned here on CC to lightly grease everything.

Hope this helps.

You should not have to let it dry first. Maybe you are rolling your fondant too thick? Also, are you kneading your fondant for several minutes before you use it to make it more workable? That might help too.

You don't have to let it dry completely (well, you don't have to do this at all if you don't want to, LOL!), just for a little bit until it's not sticky anymore (assuming it's a little sticky to begin with). That's the trick I used for a fondant cake covered in fondant diamond cutouts (no pics in my gallery, sorry) and it helped a lot. I roll the fondant, let it dry for a little bit (20-30 seconds maybe) and do the cutouts. I didn't grease anything either (not saying that doesn't work, I don't know- haven't tried it that way).

I make many letters and alphabet cut outs basically roll the fondant and cut each letter out leave it for say 5 minutes time to harden/ if hot pop it in the freezer and then with a scalpel I ease out the corners just putting the scalpel in everso slightly also a little dusting beforehand with cornflour/icing sugar 50/50. Goodluck. I do not find greasing works it just makes a mess / but dust and the tap out excess.

are you talking about fmm or tappit cutters.... if so the trick is to roll it super super thin... almost to see through it.

I woke up this morning thinking that the fondant might have been too soft...I will try it again when I get home from work tonight. I tried dipping in oil and powdered sugar...
dky they are advertised under the wilton site, under fondant supplies, alphabet cut outs...I think!

I just ran into this same problem I made the easy Amish fondant and I dusted in CS and greased the cutters with Crisco and I thought maybe if I cut them out and leave them on the mat without moving them and just peel away the remaining fondant and let them sit there awhile and dry then try to remove them . Saturday morning I tried and tried and it is like kettlevalleygirl stated I wrecked everyone that got stuck into the cutters I tried everything trying to get them out without tearing them up with no luck later on today Im going to try again and I will let you know how it goes.

I have the Wilton Alphabet and Number Fondant cut-outs and haven't been able to cut a single letter or number. I have tried with gumpaste, also to no avail. Dusting them with cornstarch, Crisco, whatever.I decided to buy some other set.Probably one that you might reccomend will not stick.

I have this set & used it for the first time on my dd 3rd bday cake (Barney CCC in my photos) with fondant made from Toba Garrett's recipe. They all worked great except for the B - it took about 8 times to get the B right. I dusted them lightly in 50/50 cornstarch/icing sugar & my fondant was rolled probably to about 1/8 inch thick.... My fondant was not sticky at all or I think all the letters would have stuck. But that darned B gave me so many problems because of the 2 holes in it I think... Eventually I just decided this was as good as it was going to get & used the best of what I had. I tried poking it gently with a toothpick too & that didn't help. I think next time maybe I'll try popping it in the freezer for a minute & see if it comes out any easier.
