Hello Everyone. I am new to the forum area and Cake Central. I love the site! I have a question.... Someone emailed me a picture of a cake (Barn cake that says "Happy Birthday Jack" from

www.cakeworkscentral.com/newsletters/farm.htm

I do not know how much this would normally cost because of all the little work that goes along with it. 3 cupcake haystacks, royal icing doors, fence, scarecrows, sheep, pigs, cows, and chicks. Could someone please help me!

Thank you in advance!!!!!

I am just throwing a figure out there since I have never sold any myself, but since I can imagine all the work that would go into it and thinking about it from a customer's perspective I would guess maybe $100-$150. I'm sure more experienced people on here could help you better...bump!

Thank you fallonb2000. Any other thoughts out there would be greatly appreciated. I told her I would call tomorrow. I know..... Nothing like waiting until the last minute.

Thanks again!

Hey there

I just glanced at the picture, so I could be a little (or ALOT!) off on this, but...if thats the same house pan I have, it only serves about 10-15 people. So, if you add 3 cupcakes, that takes it to 18 people max. I usually figure $3/person for most things that dont have fondant--which brings you only to $54. I might add on another $15 or $20 for the time it will take to make the animals and other small details.

I do charge about $5/person for any 3D cakes...but I usually dont charge that much if the 3D shape comes from a pan (as opposed to my freehand carving).

Hope that helps!

Thank you everyone for your help. I quoted her a price and have not heard back. I quoted $55 because it was with the house pan. Thanks again!

I know you already gave her a price, but at $55 you're giving your time away for free. It's going to take a long time to make those animals. This seems really cheap to me. Just my two cents.

Thank you SarahJane. I thought so too, but she didn't. She never called me back. Oh well, I am still learning pricing for things that are not connected to the cake. And learning that people think they should be able to get "specialty" cakes for the price of Walmart cakes. Part of life. Live, move on and continue baking.

That is the truth--stick to your guns on pricing. In both of my careers (law and baking) people seem to always want top-notch service at bottom-feeder prices!!

Unless you are doing something completely out of love or you have more free time than you know what to do with it, it is better to walk away from doing a cake that you will feel incredibly underpaid for, than to do it and not get what you deserve!
