When I was a little girl, my mom used to let me do the same anytime someones birthday was coming up. She would make the "real cake" for the family, and I would make a smaller one that was a special gift from me. I was always so proud of my creations made with all the extra icing. I'm now 28, and I can say that I'm so glad my mom got me into decorating at a young age. If you teach her some of the basic techniques, you will be amazed at how good she will get with time. I started to take classes recently with my mom, so I could share the same thing with my daughter someday! This is truly something both of you will cherish later on!!
So cute. My boys always ask if they can help decorate.
This is so cool. Today I did a chocolate presentation in my 5 year old preschool classe.
I showed them some finished products, I made a couple in front of them and then they had 1 hour to choose what to do today, painting and chocolates and other stuff.
Well I sat at a table with my Spring looking molds and all 13 kids, came to see me during that hour. 3 to 6 at a time. I had melted wafers in wilton bottles in red, blue, yellow, white and milk chocolate. Some did single colors other mixed and match other make orange or purple it was great.
At the end of class the teacher asked what they liked best. The first 6 kids including my son said..play outside and this robot game, the 7 other starting with 3 little boys said CHOCOLATES, then the all said chocolats.
When they were done I told them they were all Chocolatier's in the making. They thought that was a really cool name.
They all took their creations home. They were thrilled.
Seeing kinds be creative like you niece is wonderfull, spending quality time with them like this is something they will cherish for ever. I remember my mom and my aunts making things like this with me and I loved it. This was over 30-35 years ago and I still remember. I'm 38 they started me early too!
Good for you mizshelli, your niece will surely remember this for a long long time.
Good Luck on your next baking project.
My boys always want to help but I never can let them because its for a customer. I told them on their birthdays I'd let them decorate their own cake. They are excited but the thing is, they think I'm going to be showing them how to make some kind of 3D creation...while I was just thinking about showing them how to ice a cake and then giving them some colors and some candies and letting them go at it.
So we will have to decide which is more important...them getting a cool 3D cake made by mommy, or having the fun of doing it by themselves even if the picture doesn't make it to my website. haha.
Too cute!! Definately tell her I said great job!!! Jen
What a good idea to bake an extra cake, I think I'll try that with my 3 yo. ![]()

When I am done with a cake, I pull out some frozen cupcakes and let the kids have the colored tubes and go to town. They love it.
They know if they are good while I work - which is not often when they are up. But when I do, they will get a little reward and get to play with Mommy's tools. ![]()

Wow, everyone on here has such great ideas! I'm going to have to try THAT too ![]()
She did a wonderful job on her cakes.
I've found that if you teach this stuff to your kids it pays off.
My oldest can melt candy for me in the microwave and fill molds if I want just one color for something.
My youngest claims the KitchenAid as his. ![]()
The little one is ALWAYS in the kitchen with me, he'll quit playing to help me cook or bake and gets mad if I don't call him.
Walmart has some small non stick pans that don't take much cake, my MIL bought some in the baking aisle (they aren't Wilton).
If you want something a little bigger Wilton used to make little pans that took about 1/4-1/3 of a cake mix. They had 4 different generic ones: rag doll, train, antique car and bear, I have the first three that I got off ebay and my kids think they're great. THey also made some disney characters at about the same time.
