i am still learning alot of stuff especiall from cakecentral. Could someone tell me if i could paint directly on fondant with the cake coloring you buy from Wal-mart and Hobby Lobby (Wilton) . the ones that are $1.27. And if so what do i use to thin it out water, lemon juice, or something else? i don't know what gel someone you pros are talking about when you say you purchase gel colors . Sorry for being so green!

Are the colours you buy a liquid - like water? Or are they more thick like a paste? I'm only familiar with the Wilton paste colours - where you stick a toothpick in the jar of colour and then into your icing.

If it is the paste type ones, you can definitely paint with them. I've thinned mine out with water when necessary. You can also use high proof alcohol (Everclear) or extracts.

I don't think the liquid ones would have enough colour intensity to paint with.

HTH!

i've only used wilton's gel paste colors, which work great. They say gel based or something like that right on the jar. if you go to hobby lobby, they should have them there. just get the ones in the cake deco isle, that don't say airbrush or candy color! i thin mine with vodka, you could use lemon extract (not juice), but don't use water. it will make your fondant sticky. you don't need to thin them though, you can just paint with the colors straight from the jar. (except, don't dip your brush in the jar, pour the color on a little plate or dish. getting any frosting or food in your colors will make them mold) does that help?

I use petal dust mixed with vodka, with a little whitener thrown in if the fondant is colored in order to make the "paint" opaque. I just uploaded a photo where I painted flowers on a fondant covered board using that method if you want to see the effect.

Americolor is also a great brand to use. I took a class at a local ICES day of sharing that taught one-stroke painting on fondant. The instructor had a special line of Americolor gels made up that are slightly thicker than regular paste colors - mix them with white color to get the colors you want. The instructor's name was Laurel Silverburg if you want to look her products up.

You can also use melted coco butter and mix petal dusts with that to paint on fondant.
