Hey guys,
Today I am tackling my first paid cake. Some of you might have read other posts about this silly cake.
First it was going to be a white cake with gumpaste tulips. But then it turns out I suck at making gumpaste tulips.
Then I was going to make a windmill cake. Then my windmill blades broke and I got too frustrated to try and fix it.
Now I am planning on making a cake shaped like a clog. So I baked my cakes last night. At lunch I took them out of the freezer to check on them, and I realized that after the cake is shaped, it will be much too small (I used my oval Wilton pans from my Course 2 kit). Now I am going to have to make another cake after work (I made two cakes, but only using three layers for the one clog....so I will have to make one more cake, torte it and use the extra layer from the first batch of cakes) - and make two clogs instead of just one.
I have been reading through all the threads on sculpting, and now I am worried that I will be in over my head!
I am planning on delivering the cake on Friday night, so hopefully I can finish it tonight and actually enjoy my weekend.
Was anyone else's first paid cake this stressful?!?!?
Yes! You're not the only one who has stressed over their first cake. I'm sure there are plenty more out there who (including me) wished they had never agreed to it. : )
But don't worry- you'll look back on it and see what you did right and what you will want to fix for the next time.
As long as you learn from it, it will all be worth it in the end.
Good luck, smile, and make sure to post a pic when it's over!! : )
Aww...dont get frusterated, obviously they hired you because they know you can do it!
My first ever cakes were paid cakes that I really didn't have the experience to do. They took me all day to do. They were the kitty cat cake and the lion sheet cake. I was a little over my head when I told her I could do the two cakes for the same party. I charged not enough...but I was still learning.
Don't stress to much...it will come out in the end. And I have been having a hard time with gumpaste tulips too!!! I really don't know what I am doing wrong. I just can't get them to look right.
Keep plugging away....I bet this cake will be fantastik!!!!
I don't do cake as a business, but I can understand how much work goes into cakes, that;s why I admire all of you a whole lot who goes thru this all the time. The way you please your customers and all that. Kudos to all of you !!
Right now as for, I have a work in progress, w/c is my entry to the County Fair Cake Decor. Contest in May 23rd. I've been losing sleep over it. Trying to figure out which color to use etc......thank God it's a dummy cake.
Anyway, I'm sure there is a solution to all your dilemmas (?)..they have faith in you that's why they asked you to do these cake. ![]()
Thanks for the kind words....
I forgot to mention that I think I may be undercharging too...I quoted her $25 because this is my first "official" cake and I didn't want to start off too high. As soon as that was out of my mouth I thought, "That's not going to be enough!"
I will be sure to post a picture once this fiasco is over with!
Just an update:
I baked, carved and iced the cakes tonight. When I was done carving them, I actually thought they looked like clogs! But when the icing was put on...well, it takes away from the shape a bit. I had to ice them on seperate surfaces so I could get both sides fully iced of each clog...and while DH was trying to help me move one clog beside the other....the front of one clog cracked. I patched it up with icing...but the icing on the first clog is slightly darker than the icing I used for the second clog and the repair job!
And it is oh so greasy. Blech.
This cake is not even done yet, and I want to call it a disaster already.
I told DH that I am so ashamed I may just get him to drop the cakes off so that I don't have to see her expression when she see the clogs. Which I think look like chicken nuggets now. ![]()
I once did a truck cake that I felt the same way about. I had a vision what it would look like...did all the research. but when I was done....it didn't look like my vision. I was so upset. I wasn't charging much for the cake....and since I was so disappointed with it....I just gave it to her. I told her I couldn't ask her to pay for something I wasn't happy with.
She thought it looked nice...not great...just nice...which ment she didn't like it.
I wouldn't go that far just yet for your cake....just don't stress...and just keep the creative "high" going. It will turn out!!!
I am going out of town this weekend (leaving at noon) So I will check back on Sunday night or Monday morning and see how it turned out.
You'll do fine.
I'm interested in the outcome, too. How did it go?
