Well, call me crazy, but I don't know about this:

I was watching Sandra Lee Semi-Homemade and more than one time when she has made cakes from cake mix she says that she is going to keep the mix in the bowl for later so she can lick it.

Now, there are raw eggs in there, won't this be an unsafe thing to do?

YES, but I always have to take a lick before I wash the bowl. I just can't help it icon_cry.gif

Technically, you might not want to because of the raw eggs. But the actual odds of getting an egg with salmonella are very, very slim (like one in 20,000).

That being said, I do it all of the time. Brownie batter is my FAVORITE!

I don't know guys. I've been licking the bowl to get the leftover batter since I was a child and never once had any problems. I'm sure if you eat an entire batter raw, you would have a problem. However, I try to limit myself to just a fingerful or two icon_biggrin.gif

I am a little concerned about that bird flu thing that is going around though. I won't let the kids lick the batter so mommy has to sneak really fast when she is washing the bowl......lol. I do however let tehm go to town on the frosting and that seems to make up for it. icon_biggrin.gif

Oh, wow, okay, I never did as a child and don't as an adult because I mainly make scratch cakes...

But my mom was never a baking person, so I never learned that you could do this...

I have to agree with the bowl lickers! When my husband comes home and smells a cake in the oven the first thing out of his mouth isn't "Hi honey I'm home" it's "Did you save me the bowl?"! I tend to limit the kids to about one spoonful each (you know all that salmonella stuff) but the adults seem to have at it!

My mom would always let us lick spoons, beaters, and bowls when we were children. Then in HS I took a cooking class and learned about raw eggs and I just can't do it anymore. My sisters and mother all still do though. I look at it now and all I see is that shiny, glossiness left behind by the egg and it sort of makes me sick.

I also don't like eggs over easy for the same reason. Everything about an egg should be cooked, in my opinion.

I always taste the batter! Have to make sure it tastes good! I also make chocolate cookie dough and keep it in the fridge and eat it by the spoonful. I have been doing this since I was a kid and have never had any problems.

I used to lick the bowls when i was younger. but not too much. Now that i'm older & have kids i don't do it anymore. And don't let my kids do it. They beg me each and everytime to let them lick, not a chance with me. My has always been around them and she used to let them. I don't know why, but i always thought they'd over do it and get sick from their stomach (belly aches or something). I never really gave the raw egg a second thought.

Hmmmmmmmm....Maybe I'll raid the cabinet to see if I have any right now!! Yummmmmmm!!! I'm a bowl licker too...I've done since I was a kid!! Old habits are hard to break... icon_biggrin.gif

Raw eggs are not this horrible evil they're made out to be. The chances of actually having an egg with salmanella (sp?) are very slim AND if you just happen to get that one egg you won't necessarily even get sick.

What about merigue or eggnog? There are a lot of raw eggs whites being used. Sure, there are people that should not consume raw eggs, but the average healthy person licking batter isn't going to have any problems. But, hey nobody's forcing you right? LOL - eat this, come on, just try it. icon_biggrin.gif

Tami: you crack me up!!!!!! icon_biggrin.gificon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

My daughter loves the stuff too. Whenever I am making a flan (Spanish custard), I call her over to lick the can. It keeps me for doing it myself and gaining the extra pounds!!!

Me too, I'll take my chances, hasn't hurt me in 30 odd years - I let my kids lick too, one of the joys of childhood!

"Hello. My name is Wendy and I am a licker."
I lick everything...the bowl, spatula, mixers, etc. You name it. If its got batter/frosting on it, I lick it.
I've been makin' scratch cakes forever and I've always licked everything....I can pretty much lick it clean and put it back in the cupboard. (just kiddin')

I can't believe that there are people in this world that don't lick the bowl or eat raw cookie dough. That's the only reason I bake! I don't remember my mom doing that but I was the last of 5 kids so she probably never got the chance as one of us was always standing there waiting on the beaters or the bowl. When I turn on my mixer my 19 mo. old grandson comes running. He knows that batter of some kind is in his near future.

When I make choc chip cookies my grandkids would rather take the dough home in a zip lock bag than have me bake the cookies. I never bake my cookies or brownies for the full amount of time as I like to eat them "doughy". Actually, my kids call it "squeaky", a name they came up with when they were little.

My daughter loves raw bread dough and always eats the hot rolls in the middle of the pan that are not as done as the rest.

I'm just glad to know that we are among the majority from the sounds of this forum. thumbs_up.gif

You people should be ashamed of yourselves!!!! All that licking of bowls and spoons..eating batter and raw eggs. Salmonella should be your middle name!!! **** I say all this whilst polishing off a roll of Pillsbury cookie dough**** icon_biggrin.gif

I am a licker. You name it, if it has batter or dough (cookie) on it I'm gonna have a taste. I let my son do it also. Of course there is not much left in the bowl to begin with. I make sure I scrape the bowl first.

I have a compromised immune system because of a transplant and I have never gotten sick. And I would be the first one to get sick.

My daughter used to buy a roll of Pillsbury dough and come into my bar when I owned it and sit there and eat it with a spoon. Laid it down one time to go get her a soda and one of the customers hid it from her. She was irate.....made quite a scene. Everyone saw the humor but her.........

Wendy - your prouncement too funny!

This could easily lead to a deabate on which is actually better the baked chocolate chip cookie or the batter for the cookie??

I usually have at least two cookied polished off before they make it out of the bowl! icon_surprised.gif
