I second that vote! And if you add a couple of spoonfuls of milk (it doesn't matter what size, we're not actually baking here) to the raw dough, it makes it really creamy and oh so good. (That was an accidental discovery the night that I tried to change the channel with a glass of milk in my hand. Luckily the bowl of dough caught the spilled milk, and a wonderful new treat was discovered!)

And they say necessity is the mother of invention. Fooled them, huh? Sounds like an accident was the mother of invention in this case. icon_lol.gif

Whoever came up with the saying "Don't cry over spilled milk" spilled their milk in their cookie dough!

I took some food science courses few years back when I was in college and from what I've learned is that it's a very small risk when you lick your cake batter - either cake mix or scratch recipe. However, there is a high risk if you leave a batter in a bowl for a long time, like several hours, and lick it. The raw egg gets "spoiled" once it gets too warm or sit in it for a long period of time.

You can see why most body builders like to drink raw eggs once a day for super protein. They drink it immediately after the eggs are out of the fridge. The eggs were still cold.

I have to add my two cents. I agree I've been eating raw dough of almost any kind since I was a wee child. My randma made the best homemade noodles, and we always ate the dough raw. As far as I am concerned I think you can taste a dough and tell if it will be good when done. I vote for raw dough.

I have to add my 2 cents. I have had severe stomach problems for roughly 2 years (since my first surgery to FIX a problem!), and had not been able to eat without severe pain or getting sick afterward - lost over 30 pounds (and weighed 125 to begin with)- had to start shopping in the girls clothes section of Penney's -sad- after a second surgery to remove the gallbladder (which my stupid surgeon thought was the root of my problem), I still had issues. Went to a wonderful surgeon 8 months ago, and had it fixed (the first surgery was done "wrong" and was the issue the whole time)- she re-did the first surgery and I am waaayyy better! Oh geez I am rambling again, but because of 3 surgeries on the stomach in two years time, I still have a pretty sensitive stomach and have to be careful with what I eat, but I CAN EAT CAKE BATTER WITH NO PROBLEMS- yeah. icon_smile.gif So, if this stomach-problem riddened 32 year old can eat it, many of you can! All 4 of my kids do- not alot, but enough to get the satisfaction! It grosses my husband out- ooh, which brings up another idea for a post that I need to ask everyone!

My daughers LIVE for those beater's. There are 2 beaters and 2 of them so its just right, just like when I was a kid. The best part is trying to wrap your tongue around the other side of the beater to get the inside part....{drooling} I think I'll go make some brownies.

I'm glad this subject came up. I was also a child licker, but in recent years have been scared to because of salmonella. Now I can lick again with no fear!!

I'm glad to know there are other members of LA (Lickers Annonymous) out there. Sure feels good knowing that I am not alone. I'll confess, I've been a licker most of my life. My mother used to have to hide the bowl from me or I would eat the whole thing before she could even make a cake. icon_lol.gif

Now a days, when I turn on a mixer, I hear the pitter patter of my daughter's feet running 90 to nothing into the kitchen. The next sounds are the kitchen chair being pulled across the floor and her saying, "My turn. My turn. I eat cake." She just turned 2 by the way. Yep, got her trained already.

He's like omg your going to get so sick and my response is usually good, at least I had some good cake first!!!!hhahahaaa

Stopped at the grocery store for a gallon of milk last night and when I saw the Pillsbury cookie dough in the dairy case, it took every ounce of willpower I had not to buy some. All I could think of is all the responses in this forum. I have concluded that we are all addicts and need to form a LA group. Bet it would be the largest twelve step program they've had yet..........icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif

Ok, so I guess I'm going to be the odd ball out. I used to lick the cake batter off of the beaters when I was a child. Us three kids would fight over them (there were only two beaters) But I've got to admit, I haven't done it ever since the subject came up about salmonella. It's not that I wouldn't like to but I'm just afraid to take a chance. See, I'm usually that one in a 200.000 who gets these things icon_cry.gif So, I just don't chance it. But I've got to admit, it is still tempting. I'd love to try out the Italian buttercream recipe but that worries me too with the raw egg whites. Oh well, my loss, I guess.

Its funny, ya never know how a thread is gonna go....I think this one took off so well cuz 'licking the bowl', spatula, mixers, etc... brings back alot of childhood memories for people...its the stuff ya want and like to talk about.

Hi Wendy!
I have licked the bowl and paddles since I was a little girl too...LOVE IT. I think cake batter is the best. Like Kerri729, I had my gall bladder removed a couple years ago and I still lick the bowl and eat the cookie dough! You don't know what your missing until you've licked the bowl!!

LMAO ok so I'm not the only one!!

Is it bad that I've purposefully left some batter in the bowl and then taken a spoon to it while the rest of the cake was in the oven??

Call me weird but I actually like the batter better than I like the cake.. icon_confused.gif

I cannot tell a lie, I......am a cake batter junkie!!! I love the stuff! I definitely like it better than the cake.....but it's a little difficult to decorate the batter. LOL

My kids and Husband all lick the paddles, and the bowl.....if they can get them away from me!

I tend to stay away from letting the kids lick the batter too, but honestly they've never really been interested in it.

Now, the icing thats a different story...my 20 month old actually goes to the drawer, gets a spoon, climbs on the chair & sticks his spoon in the bowl & eats it!! He can't get enough of it!

Lickers? Spoons? No no no my friends. A nice sturdy rubbermaid spatula will get every last bit out of the bowl (for you, not for the pan)!

I don't let my kids lick the bowl for batter, but I do it myself. I tell them when they're an adult, they can live dangerously too! They practically wrestle me down for the frosting bowl though!

By the way, I had to click off this topic when my husband came in. If he saw all these self-professed LICKERS, well, I never would have heard the end of it! icon_wink.gificon_biggrin.gif
