I am making a cake that will have drop flowers for the borders. I started thinking about how much would go to waste if I make the flowers out of royal vs. buttercream. i.e. The buttercream tastes better and may get eaten. So last night I made a bunch of flowers. I have no idea how many I actually will need to use, but all I keep thinking about is how fragile they are and I wonder if they will make it to the birthday party. I guess I should have made the royal icing flowers instead. I still have time, but I just dread having to do it all over again, especially making the icing and trying to match up the colors. This isn't an official disaster yet, but it could easily turn into one. Yikes!
Hey, your not an idiot! I had to make a ton of little drop flowers for Wilton Course 1 and they were all made out of buttercream. Just give them enought time to harden on the counter (not the fridge). Of course you will need to make extra for breakage but most of them will make it!
Try freezing the flowers, and put them on the cake frozen.
I do this all the time with my roses, but I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work with drops.
Good Luck!
I never had any problems with cracking
They look like they were just made!
Here is a picture of the cake I have been worrying over.

(edited because I put the wrong link in the first time.)
I freeze all of my pre-made buttercream flowers! It works great, and they are SOOOOOO much easier to put on the cake.
The drop flowers tend to thaw pretty quickly, so you may have to pop them back into the freezer a few times before your done. I have never had a problem with cracking, except for an occasional break when I'm lifting them off of the wax paper.
It turned out great. The colors go very well with the image on the cake, I like them. Of course I may be partial because my name is Kirsten. ![]()
The cake is very pretty and you did a great job. See, you worked yourself up for nothing. LOL.
