My husband wants to build me a kitchen at home so I can bake and sell cakes from home. I would love to do this, but I'm scared to death! What if I, or my Mom, or anyone else get sick and I am unable to finish a wedding cake, or something that really matters? Do those of you who bake from home have a "buddy-baker" to help out in an emergency,or what? I would HATE to ruin someone event.

I think it's very wise to have someone whom you can refer a job to in the event of an emergency. Even better if it's reciprocal.
One of my best friends is also a pastry chef and we have each others backs. Thankfully, we've never had to cover, but it's nice to know she's there.

I really don't know anyone else who decorates cakes. How wierd would it be to call other bakers (that I don't know) and ask them?

i am lucky and my fiance helps me set up all of my cakes and he is even at the point where he can do some piping work, my mom also can do some basic cake work. the best plan is to always give yourself plenty of time for mistakes and setbacks, that way if you do get sick you can have the time to come up with a good plan. i also have a few numbers of the other cake bakers in the area so i can refer people to them. whatever you decide to do you will be amazed at what you can accomplish on your own. good luck.

I think I have seen some post with the "calling all bakers in [blank] area. "

You might want to start taking to other CC's in your area, you might find some partners in crime!! Sort of speak! icon_wink.gif

Good Luck.

Yep, I agree too. I have gotten to know a few people from CC and my Wilon classes in my area and I know I could call on them if I needed anything. We even call each other for supplies if we run out (like luster dusts). It's nice to have a network of cake buddies!

On a Tuesday night before a Wedding cake due on Sat., right before Christmas my DH and I got Norwalk Virus. It's amazing how much energy you can muster up when something is so important. I think it would be great to have a back up buddy!

Life always happens when there's work to be done, doesn't it?

I've spent many a night working on cakes if my son gets sick, or is just having a really rough day (he has Autism). I started out decorating cakes when we had two foster children, our 2 young nephews, and our son under this roof. So, I'm used to working at night! Now, it's just one kid, but a lot more business.
And yes, when we get sick, we always find the energy. Somewhere. And my husband always gives good hugs and cheers me on when I need some motivation to finish things the best that I can.

It happens! I have a friend that we back each other up if needed. I have only needed her once, because my mom died unexpectedly. She has never had to use me yet.

Are there any cake clubs in your area? Maybe you could join one and that would give you a large base to cull from in the even of sickness. I got very ill a few years ago and my instructor picked up the two weddings I had scheduled. Maybe you could speak with a local instructor to get a list of potential buddies.

This issue probably worries most work from home decorators, I know that I think I could be in trouble if I got really sick. I have had nasty colds and last week I even had food poisoning (bad chinese takeaway!) and still managed to get my cakes done. I was pooped and the rest of the house is a mess, but at least I got paid and didn't cancel on customers.
I can't use other decorators, as the only ones near me who do my type of cakes charge hundreds of dollars to do so. (nothing like my cheap prices).
I do think you manage to soldier on through most illnesses and as long as you take extra hygiene precautions, you won't spread germs, but it is a bit of a battle when you get sick.

It's times like those, that I wish I was a twin! icon_lol.gif
