OK, so after my first paid success of my Naruto cake, I get to thinking about the one I have due in May. I want to make a basketball for a teenager who will be 17, and I want to use the ball pan. Here's my questions:

1. How many people will that cake feed approximately? I see that the pan is only 6"???????

2. How the heck do I cut it?

3. How do I transport it (45 miles away)

4. What would the sturdiest cake batter be? And can I fill it?

Thanks so much for your help. I wouldn't even try this if it weren't for this site.

I've done many ball cakes that have travelled (even though that's illegal in basketball hahahaha). You can see one in my gallery.

The ball cake doesn't yield many servings. 8-10 at the most. If you need more, just put it on another cake.

To cut it, just cut it in half. Place the half on a plate and cut pieces from there.

Whether you're transporting it 45 miles or 45 feet, you will need to drive two sharpened dowels or skewers through the cake and into the base board. If you use only one, the cake will spin around. Cut them just shorter than the cake so they end below the surface.

I use the WASC recipe or, for chocolate, the pound cake recipe on the DH devils food box.

Hope this helps!

Funnyyyyyyy
I was hoping someone had actually made one of these before. I will probably have to make 2. UNLESS I do a sheet cake 'court' and plop the ball on top of that....hmmmmmmm....

I did a ball cake (in my photos) on top of a 10" cake. What I did so that the ball sat on the cake without rolling was to cut a small piece off of the bottom on 1/2 of the ball cake so it sat level. I used a cake mix for the cake and it worked wonderfully. I didn't travel with it but if I did I would put a dowel all the way through the cakes to the bottom board.

Oh, and I agree with DianeLM, 8-10 servings.

Further to DianeLM, I would to only fill it with buttercream, do not go fancy on the cake ball. My slid, granted we drove 30 miles and my skewers were no in my board -- but the thing just slid and I was only able to use the top portion with the rest of the ccc I made, it still worked out. I have a made up photo, (I had forgotten my camera for the party).

Good Luck.

If you are making a 3D ball, make sure you put the seam going horizontally and dowell it. If you put the seam vertically it will likely split in half during transport due to the weight....the buttercream just will not hold it firm enough that way!! Goodluck!!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA I was just thinking if someone put it vertically. That would be one of mine I'm sure. Can you see it... the cake is there, the person goes to cut it and WHAM!!!! the cake splits & the person cutting it looks like it's their fault. Sorry, I just pictured it this way. Not to offend any one.
