I am doing a graduation cake in two weeks and have planned to do a graduation hat on top of a sheet cake. Similar to the one that is in the articles section on this site. How do I cover the cardboard with fondant? Is there something I need to use to hold the fondant on the board? Also, what do I do to get the board to stay on the sports ball? Thanks for all your help. icon_biggrin.gif

You would want to hold that fondant down with something... thin icing layer should work. For holding the thing on the ball pan, I would either use melted chocolate or even royal icing for that. If it's still too wobbly, maybe a toothpick through the top would work.

When I made one I used piping gel to stick the fondant to the board. I also used melted choc to stick the board to the cake and it held fine (with a two hr drive to the party)

Just brushing the board with a tiny bit of water will help the fondant stick. To get the bard to stay on the sports ball, slice a bit off the top to give it a flat surface to adhere to, then I would go with the piping gel that katiebug suggested.

I'll be making a grad cap also. I was thinking of using a square cookie instead of cardboard to make the whole thing edible. Has anyone tried that? Do you think I could get the cookie thin enough to look right and stay together?

I've made several of these....can't help w/ the fondant sticking to the board as I ice mine w/ buttercream, but I can tell you that I've used piping gel, buttercream, royal and toothpicks to secure the hat, but melted chocolate worked best! Good luck!

I have a graduation cap in my photo album. I made the base out of the Betty Crocker Bake N Fill pan. Then I made the square part from melted chocolate. I melted it then poured it on wax paper on a cookie sheet and once it had cooled down a little I cut it into a square. I just stuck it on top of the cake - (cake was iced with buttercreme)
