I've been seeing (and really liking) some of the chocolate transfers on here but was wondering how you get so many different and wide range of colours. Can you use the gel colours from Wilton? I don't know that there are any other kinds here in Canada...I get my colours for my icing and also my candy chocolates from Michaels...I don't think I've seen any other colours here (or least where I'm from)...

instead of coloring chocolate I would get the candy melts from wilton. The gel colors will seize up the chocolate and make it grainy and unedible.

wilton does make colors specifically for chocolate. they look exactly like gel colors, but say chocolate (or candy. i forget which) on them.

they have oil based colors at michaels for candy. I think americolor has something you can add to the gels so you can use that. I never do chocolate though. I have used the oil based ones though once. It turned out good.

I have done a lot of CT's now and my personal preference is to buy the pre colored melts as much as possible. Then if you cant get the color you want, either mix the melts together or add candy color. Personally I prefer the chefmaster's brand over wilton. Mainly because it comes in a nice squeeze bottle. Otherwise you can buy the flo coat (americolor) and add your regular colors, but I have found this to be less effective. Some people get buy using a glop of crisco. But really it is easier IMO to buy pre colored then used candy colors.

I buy what I can but if I need to I use regular coloring and shortening. I don't always have the option of buying colored melts since we're so far from places that sell them.

I use AmeriColor Oil Candy Colors. They come in primary colors and from that you can make any color you want. For example, yellow and blue make turquoise.

I add my own color to the candy melts. I just melt the candy melts and then add some liquid crisco. Next, I add the color I want. The colors will seize without it because it needs a "fat" to cling on to. So, Crisco is it. The more color you add, the more Crisco I have found that you need to put in.

It's fun experimenting and getting all different kinds of color blends.

Good Luck!

I agree with merissa, although I make chocolate out of mold 99% of time and have only done a few CT's. I get a bag of mixed chocolate wafers. I mix my colors all the time, to get darker or other colours. As you cannot get skin tone, I mix 1/2 a milk chocolate wafer with a couple of white and a pink or 2 and voila. You start from ther and adjust. I make these colour mixes in a plastic egg tray, from tupperware. It goes in the microwave and then I set in on top of a "material rice bag" to keep it warm. It works great. You could also use a devil eggs plate to mix all those fun colors. Just make sure you note what you used to mix your colours so if you run out you can make it again! Like merissa, I dont like the wilton's taste either. I get mine from a cake decorating store locally Sweet Celebrations in MN. www.sweetc.com you can check out the on the right under candymaking then ingredients and you will get to a list of all chocolates available. ( not sure if they ship to Canada) I know other places do, just cant think of the sites right now.
There has to be places locally where you can buy some of these. I used to live in Canada too and I usually found some little store. I can think of Mordens in Winnipeg on Elice I think, they ship only within Canada, they make and have great stuff - Dont know if they have a web site yet. Family owned and operated, on second generation now. icon_wink.gif

Good Luck. thumbs_up.gif

Is almond bark the same thing as candy melts? The walmart here no longer carries wilton candy meltsicon_sad.gif In fact they hardly carry wilton or cake stuff for that matter. I thought superWalmarts were suppost to be super. Ours is pretty sucky. Sorry, I got a little carried awayicon_smile.gif

No problem, I am not sure about the almond bark, I forget what it's really made of. But the taste is ok. If you can check out the web site on www.sweetc.com they list the different chocolates that you can order and that they carry. It's a lot of good information.

There are a lot of places that sell chocolate on the net, the only problem is that summer is coming and they will soon stop to ship the stuff, because it might arrive as a pool or chocolate instead of wafers.

I also like this web site that talks about chocolate and the history and all.

Good Luck.

Thanks gateaux! I will have to check these out. I am a little hesitant to order by mail only because of the heat.

Well, the problem is that you wont know how many times the chocolate has melted and then hardened. It's a little like tempering. Just on an unknown scale.

Maybe you can try and find a chocolate store that will sell you chuncks by the lb. Some place do that.
So you can then, find the right coloring colors and go to town and make your own good tasting wafers. Yum!

Good Luck.

I see what you are saying. I didn't think about it in transit, only on my porch. I will probably have to drive to VA(about an hour depending on traffic) to get what i need. I so hate to do that even more so now that gas is almost $3. Plus I have very little self control in Michael's.
