Hello to everyone! I've been browsing the forum for a month now and I have to say it is definitely addictive!! So much talent.

I need big time help, I'm a beginner cake decorator and I would like to make this cake for my son's birthday. I dont remember where I got this picture from, but my son went crazy over it.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Believe me when I tell you that cake is very ambitious for a beginner! I am a beginner as well and nothing has been as easy as it looks. How much time do you have to practice? I would probably tend to start out smaller and work my way up, but this is just my opinion!

I think you can probably make a version of this cake. The hardest thing would be the car on top but you could always use a matchbox car for that. It is basically a two tier cake with a part of another cake butted up next to the bottom tier. When I made my race car cake, I baked a tier the same size as the cake above (and same height) then used the cake pan from the bottom tier to mark the part to cut away. Once you have done this you can butt it up against the bottom tier and cut a slant for the "ramp". I also used dowels to hold the partial cake in place. If you ice in fondant it will also help with stability.

Go for it!! The only way to improve is to keep working. I've learned the most from things that didn't work out like I planned.

Crystalina1977,
I'm with you 100%. This cake isn't an easy one!
But as Daisy stated , maybe Lindazully might be able to do a much simpler version.

Thanks for your replies. Yes is definitely a hard cake, but I'm willing to practice all I have to, my son practically begged me to do this cake for him. Actually I don't want to make the car on top, basically just the two tiers and the other decorations.

The trees and the fence, those I would love to do, as well as the road. I just don't know how to make the trees, what are they made of? icon_confused.gif .

I want to make a practice cake, well a couple of practice cakes and work my way from there.

It looks like the trees are just piped on with a round tip and green and brown icing.

I think I would use chocolate melts for the trees.....and possibly some molds to make the signs, or you could just buy those! icon_rolleyes.gif

You can also do the trees with either royal icing or use fondant or candy clay. It gives great dimension and is SO much fun to play with. I know you can do it especially with practice and your son will love it no matter what. I am excited for you. Can't wait to see the pics!

An easy way to do the road is to use black sanding sugar. I did that with my son's Cars cake (in my pics). You can pipe the lines on if you want to. But the coarseness of the sugar kind of resembled black top... and I just set it on top of my icing... super simple!

Good luck!

Although I agree that this is a very ambitious cake for a beginner, I absolutely believe that you could make it, or your own version of it! It's a wonderful cake. My advice would be to draw it out, step by step....maybe make the road signs on day and set them aside to dry, etc., YOU CAN DO IT! GO FOR IT!

Cambo, I completely agree with you. Just break it down piece by piece and figure out how to do one thing at a time. That is how I make things.

lindayzully, it sounds like you have the time to practice, so look around here and ask questions. Chances are someone has done things similar to what you want to do and most people are very willing to help.

carrielynnfields... thanks! icon_biggrin.gif

Well I just did a whole town and I made signs that were very simalar to these. I made them out of gumpaste and painted them with thinned out icing color and Vanilla. The street I made out of black fondant. As for the trees in my town, I just went out and bought them. But in this cake I think that I would mold some chocolate or pipe them in place with some stiff BC.

Best advice I can give is break it down. Look at the cake in stages and one decoration at a time and work from there. I think that you can do it. I am sure that yours will be different but it will be your own. Your own design and your own ideas. As for your son he will think that yours is better, I am sure, My kids always think that mine are better. ALways helps the ego!!! lolol

Good luck and have fun that is the most important, FUN!!!

Welcome!!

Vic
