I've bought a book called The Essential Guide to Cake Decorating by Whitecap. It gives instructions on how to make basic figures (body, arms, feet, heads, hands etc), some characters (santa, raggedy anne and andy, toy soldier, fairy), animals (mouse, teddy bear, duck, pig, elephant) accessories (shoes, ties, hats, tools, books, flower pot, fruit, bows, x-mas trinkets(), and finally it helps you to do backgrounds as well (snow, sand, bricks, stone, roof tiles, floorboards, sea, pond, window, tree bark, paving cobbles, rock). HTH!
Get yourself a Sculpey clay or polymer clay book. They have wonderful pictures and instructions on how to make lots of things.

Ditto, Polymer clay books have such a variety out there and so many different techniques these are definitely the place to start.
I like 'How To Make Clay Characters' by Maureen Calson. I found it at the library. Has lots of info and step-by-step instructions.
Thank you for starting this thread, PennySue! I'd been looking on my local library's websites for books related to "sculpting" and "clay", and didn't find much. It didn't occur to me to type in "polymer"! Just tried it and sure enough I was able to request some awesome looking books (including a Maureen Carlson book - thanks for suggesting that, tomsmom)! I just love the internet - the world at your fingertips!
