With all of the powdered sugar needed for frostings, I'm wondering if anyone has tips on how to not make your kitchen a complete mess? I really enjoy all aspects of cake decorating, but the one part I hate is adding the powdered sugar to the frosting. I always get it all over the floor and the counters while I'm measuring and then the mixer makes it fly all over the place looking like a snow storm hit my kitchen. Any tips from the experts??
Thanks!
No tips from me. Not a pro - I experience the same thing...then when you wipe it up it gets sticky! My golden and my 4yo daughter love it, though.
You might already be doing this, but I pulse my KitchenAid on the lowest setting for a while, to get the powdered sugar incorporated enough.
The last instructor I had recommended cutting a hole in a paper plate where your beaters are located. Don't cut the hole too big or you will defeat the purpose. Get a large enough plate that would fit over your mixing bowl. So far so good for me.
I just use a towel over the mixer but still start with a low speed.
My towel tends to get caught by the paddle, so thanks for the paper plate tip ShyannAutumn. My KA came with the wrong splash guard, so it is completely useless.
I used to have that problem also. I have learned from my own experience to put my mixer on the lowest setting and to mix the sugar in gradually. I still get some sugar puffs, but much less than before.
