I have been looking for something to use as dummy cakes for pictures and practice and a friend suggested using rice crispys. You just make them in whatever pan you want to use and frost as normal. Have any of you done this?? Does it work well?
Styrofoam is more likely as a dummy. It can be washed and reused. however, rice krispy cake would probably work. It will be more difficult to get a smooth surface, it would not last as long as styro. it isn't cheap and you couldn't re-use it. If you just want to work on borders, use an inverted cake pan.
styrofoam would probably work the best for a permanent display
ooooohhhh....oooooohhhhh.... *jumping up and down*
I have to answer this one. When I was snooping around on the forums not to long I seen someone mention the use of rice Crispy treats for your cake. I can give first hand experience of using the treats as a delicious dummy cake. I was soooooooo sick of cakes since I had to make 2 and many cookies for the Easter Sunday. I made a large crispy fake cake for class. I knew once it was covered no one would know, and they didn't.
Frosting the fake cake was the easiest thing I've done. I didn't have to crumb coat, and the frosting went on smoothly for me. Funny thing was everyone in class kept looking at my cake and asking me how I made it so perfectly square. I had to confess when the teacher thought I had someone make it for me. Several people said that was what they were going to do next time since their kids would eat the treats faster then the cake. Once I got it home i scraped off some of the frosting and took it to work. It was gone by noon. Oh how I love that crispy fake cake. ![]()
