My daughter requested a "Dora, under the rainbow" cake for her 3rd birthday party. The party was this afternoon, and I had stayed up past midnight cleaning the house and finishing the cake last night.

Since my kids are three and four, I always have to hide my cakes so they don't get poked / prodded / eaten. My hiding places are my microwave, or inside my oven.

We had a church luncheon this afternoon also, and I had a cake for the church luncheon in the microwave, so Dora went in the oven to 'hide' until the party.

This morning (before I'd had COFFEE), I started preheating my oven to bake a casserole for the church luncheon. About ten minutes later, I realized what I had done...

...I melted the Dora cake, candle and all, and roasted the marshmallow clouds! The kids saw me crying and said, "It's okay mom! It's a GOOD Dora cake!"

Needless to say, I spent the two hours before the party rebaking and redecorating a new Dora cake (everyone else said, "just go to walmart!!!"...they are obviously not decoraters!). Thank goodness this was an easy one to redo!

I'm blaming my 'mistake' on pregnancy induced insanity (I'm 5 months along with my 3rd baby). icon_redface.gif

Well good save! She looks tremendous...and NEVER put your cakes in the oven LOL (just to hide them anyways)

Just a mistake!!!

I am sorry you had to rush and make another one! Glad you didn't run to Wal-Mart icon_smile.gif

Oh, so sorry about your melted cake. Your children sound very understanding!
The new cake is just beautiful! Great job!

And now, you will have a great scrapbook page in your daughter's scrapbook. What a memory!

Thanks for the much needed sympathy! It WILL make a great scrapbook page, and my hubby and I are already laughing about the whole thing. Now I just need to find a new hiding spot for my cakes!

As the mother of three small ones myself (4, 2, and 6 months) I feel your pain! Your cake, though, is terrific, and I'm sure it was a big hit. I still haven't found the perfect hiding spot. If you think of one, let me know!! LOL.

LOL I hear ya, five months along here with number four...

Anyway I almost did that once, not with a cake, but with some fondant stuff. I sometimes add tylose to fondant and then set it on the baking rack with a slightly warm, ajar oven to speed dry the piece. So I was letting one dry and my husband decided to warm up a frozen snack and luckily he caught the mistake before it got too hot in there!

That's just so funny-looks like something that would happen to me!
The end product looked great, though!

I'm glad you were able to recover from that. I hate it when things like that happen. You can still put your cakes in the oven. Next time just stick a sticky note over the oven controls that says "Do not heat the oven". It works for me.

BTW, I'm pregnant with my 3rd and am almost 5 months a long also.

I'm sorry this happened to you, BUT, what a birthday memory, huh? It's a DARLING cake! My grandchildren LOVE Dora. Since they live 3000 miles away, I try to do b-days when I visit in the summer. May I use your design for Britain and Ireland? I'll give you credit!

OK I just have to post on this one! I also have a Dora disaster too similar to pass up.. I hid Dora and Boots in the oven because a realtor was showing our house this past Friday, yes friday the 13th.. anyway we came home and my kids wanted chicken nuggets for dinner so i preheated the oven and sat at the computer to scan some pictures and 15 minutes went by and finally i realized what the smell was and my kitchen was filled with smoke and no alarm ever went off... I was screaming and crying for the kids to get out of the house, it could have been worse but not by much!!!! I then had three hours to recreate the cakes and you know when you're rushed it just doesn't seem to go as smooth..
Sorry thought i would share my own disaster and say I TOTALLY understand and feel for you.. I blame the realtor! Although my 5 year old says to me "well mom maybe next time you should look inside the oven before you turn it on" smart a**, he must get that from his father who just laughed at me!

OMG! icon_eek.gif I am soo sorry that happened to you!! Your second cake probably turned out better than the first! I love it! thumbs_up.gif

Maybe you can get a cake carrier that locks and put your cakes in that! I like the other Idea too of putting a sticky note on the controls!
Hope everything goes well! icon_smile.gif

The locking cake carrier and sticky notes are verrrry good ideas. Now why couldn't I think of that? icon_rolleyes.gif

kiddoscakes...your disaster sounds worse...at least we never had smoke! icon_surprised.gif And my husband's response? "You turned the OVEN on???" Uh, yeah, like I meant to!!

bethola...you can absolutely use the design. Have fun!

I´m very sorry for you. But don´t feel bad because it has happened to me too. I´ve melted plastic dishes and almost ruined a cake. I used to put them in the oven all the time but not anymore.

Sorry this happened. Congrats on the recover.
I agree with the pregnancy thing. I have a frined who's pg with her 4th. I told her I think that with each child we loose a bit of memory. That's makes a real good excuse... *cough* *cough* I mean reason this happened. icon_lol.gifthumbs_up.gif

OOOOO honey, that stinks! I ruined some fondant decos before that I was hiding in the oven. I"m a mom of 3 myself, so I get that "pregnancy induced" absentmindedness. It's like they suck the brain out of us while we're carrying them! Your second cake looks great! And if it makes you feel any better, I totally woulda eaten those roasted marshmallows! They look kinda tasty!!!

Oh, I am so sorry. I hate those disasters and last minutes. It always seems like my neighbors tell me last minute they need a cake. This weekend I whipped out a two tier roller coaster cake that I was told about less than 24 hours before the party. She does so much for me that I could not refuse. Thank goodness for box mixes.

I don't recommend the locking carrier. My two year old figured out that one real quick and destroyed a cake for my Wilton class. I hide my cakes in the pantry, and leave the scraps for my husband so he doesn't get in there. I can't wait to try those "cake balls" I found on here.

Aw, well the new Dora cake looks GREAT! And aren't the kids sweet for saying the melted one was good, lol. That sounds like something mine would do.

Don't feel bad, I do incredibly dumb things all the time and I'm not pregnant or old nor do I have any other excuse, lol!

I lol literally when I read the title I melted Dora, I was thinking maybe you left her in a warm car like I did to a baby shower cake with the cradle made out of chocolate, anyway Glad you recovered it and just when you think you've heard it all one of us does something else. My kiddo days are over but now the mid life stuff has me forgetting. Guess it never ends for us does it? Keep on keeping on though don't give up!!!!!

Great recovery! thumbs_up.gif I'm not so sure I could have recovered so quickly and nicely, or even tried. My family and guests would have been handed icecream cones and maybe cupcakes. It's okay to cry, especially being pregnant, I would have started bawling when the kids displayed such care and forgiveness. My heart would have melted right along with Dora! I think children are the only things I would pick over cake anyday! Unconditional love in all it's glory!! Good luck with the new one, that's one cake in the oven that can't get burnt! icon_wink.gif
