When you are putting fondant on a cake, how long do you let the buttercream sit before you put on the fondant? Or not at all? It seems when I try to smoth it the buttercream underneath moves a little. Should I just make the layer of buttercream thinner?

Try chilling your cake to firm up the buttercream

Yup! I just put my cake in the fridge for 15 min. before I put the fondant on! I also don't have a very thick layer of BC under the fondant! icon_biggrin.gif

Try using as little buttercream as possible. I dont let it sit at all. I cover with fondant immediately after b.c

I cover immediately as while it is soft it helps the fondant stick but if i have to leave it at all and it has set i usually brush with a little sugar syrup. Again i too only put on a thin coat specially with my 3D cakes.

I use a full layer of buttercream icing and pop the cake in the freezer for about 15 minutes. That way I can really work the fondant smooth and my icing underneath doesn't move at all. Plus, the condensation that forms on the surface of the icing as it returns to room temperature helps the fondant stick really well so I don't get any bubbles/bulges that happen when the fondant fails to adhere well to the buttercream. icon_smile.gif

So you don't have to let the buttercream crust (thin layer) before applying fondant?
