I have decided to do a huge bookworm for the baby shower that I have coming up saturday. (Storybook theme) I am going to use the caterpillar idea like in this picture.

Does anyone know how many people the ball cake pan feeds?

Also, I am going to try fondant or RBC for the first time (never used either) can I get away with just making the caterpillar and decorating him like a bookworm (with glasses) or should I cover it more so it looks more like a worm?

Any ideas on what to use for glasses?

DH thinks I should make little figurines depicting various stories to put around each worm section...Can I make these from fondant and do they have to be dried out to use them? (I have never tried anything like this)

THANKS!!!
LL

Just a thought and I have absoloutley no idea if it will work but for some reason my mind came up with string licorice. You could make 2 round circles with the licorice and the little piece in the middle to hold them together and put them on with RI sort of like glue them or I dont know if this will work but maybe cover them in royal icing then let them dry? that way they would stand away from the fact?

You could make them using black pipecleaners. Coat the bit of the pipecleaner that will be inserted into cake with some saran wrap, so that there is no contact with the cake.

According to the matrix I use the half ball serves about 10. So if you use the 5 sections as shown it should feed about 50. I agree with darcat about the glasses. HTH

You could make the glasses out of royal icing...do the circle parts then the sides..let harden and attach all together to harden.
