Does anyone own the Wilton Rose Step Saver Kit and think it is worth it? I bought it today with my 40% off coupon but if it isn't worth it, I will return it. I hesitated in the store, but I haven't had good luck making roses with buttercream and I saw a rose someone made in the galleries with the Wilton Rose Step Saver, but I have no idea who it was.

I have it and I really like it. I have never been patient enough to learn how to mae buttercream roses and I find it easy to make them from mmf. It is very helpful to have the foam squares and the ball shaping tool that they suggest in the directions, so you might want to print out another coupon and head back to Hobby Lobby to get those too. Before I had those, I used a square of felt and the end of a paintbrush but the felt left some fuzzy residue on the flowers icon_redface.gif

For those that are curious, here it is on the Wilton website (doesn't come up in a normal search for some reason):

OHHH! That one! Yeah, my mom just bought it! We are going to use it when we take Course 3 this summer! Sounded like a good deal!

If you are going to take Course 3 and you plan on buying the Course 3 Student Kit by Wilton, those flower cutters are in the kit.

Is the ball shaping tool separate from the foam square? I noticed the foam square but I didn't notice a tool with it. I was thinking I had seen a package of 5 or so tools before, but they didn't have those either. I guess Hobby Lobby gets wiped out during the unlimited sales.

Keep the replies coming.

Yes, the shaping tools and the foam squares are sold separately. However, you WILL get these in a Course 3 kit if you are planning on taking the course. I got the same tools in the gumpaste kit I bought 4 years ago.

The ball tool is separate from the foam square. It is part of the set of 5 or so tools and I don't think you can buy it by itself.

DarkChocolate,
With a 40% discount you got them at $4.80 more or less, a good buy I'll say. Hope you'll be soon making beautiful roses.

Wow! Thanks for all the replies, I am excited to see positive reviews. Can I make these flowers with MMF and Gumtex added to it? Or do I have to buy Gumpaste?

Danielle,

I forgot to say thank you for posting your picture. Your roses are beautiful!

I am now wondering if I should return my kit and just buy the Course 3 kit with a 40% coupon.

OK - I was planning on trying to make roses this week by hand out of fondant - I guess I need to go to Hobby Lobby!! Although my printer isn't working - is there another way to get a coupon? or is the sale done?

The sale will end tomorrow. I don't know of another way for you to get a coupon. When I was there a lady was offering her coupon because she didn't use it. Last year I used my birthday (August) money when Hobby Lobby had 50% off Wilton products, so that sale was either late August or maybe September. Maybe they will do that again this year.

I guess I'll just be doing them by hand! I've done it with candy clay/modeling chocolate, so I figured I could do it with fondant - although they won't be as pretty as they would be with tools, I'm sure! It's for a free cake - sort of my guinea pigs - and they don't care - they would have been happy with a plain sheetcake!! (There's no way I could do that!)

I am confused or maybe I misunderstood something. An earlier post said (or at least that was my understanding) that Course III included the items we are discussing. If you click on this link, it does not show these items. Is there another kit III that I don't know about?

http://www.fun4allpartys.com/store/product.php?productid=4175&cat=0&page=1

Those of you who have the Rose Step Saver kit, do you also have the shaping tools and foam square? If not, what do you use? One more question, approximately what do these items cost?

The link is to the old Course III kit. Course 3 was changed two years ago, and the new kit includes the 5-piece rose cutter set, thin and thick foam, and the ball & veining tool.

Would this ( Floral Collection Flower Making Set) be a good buy if I returned my Rose Step Saver Kit and bought this? It looks like I would get the foam pad, the ball tool and lots of other flower cutters. I sure wish these cutters were metal instead of plastic though.

The rose in that kit is more difficult to make. You will be cutting and thinning, and attaching each petal separately.

The "Floral Collection Flower Making Set" is much easier to work with. You can find the instructions for the rose in the yearbook.

KittyCakes,

Thank you for responding but I am still confused. The rose in which kit is more difficult to make? I thought you were talking about my link to the Floral Collection Flower Making Set, but your next sentence mentioned it being much easier to work with.

Please forgive me if I am overlooking something here, I am getting tired.

My mistake, I'm sorry. I wanted to say that the Rose Step Saver Set is much easier to to make a rose with. But you do need the thin and thick foam, and the ball and veining tool.
