Sorry I can't help you but here is a bump up for you!
Good luck!
Ok! Don't panic!
CC is here for you!
I think that if you have Americolor or Wilton paste black you could just paint over it! With the Americolor you can just use it like acrylic straight out of the bottle. But, with wilton you might want to add a little water. Just a drop or two. If this is not a good idea maybe someone else can help!
Good luck! ![]()
You can try adding more colour to the icing however it may affect the taste. If you ahve time perhaps you could start with a chocolate buttercream and then add the colour to it? It will require less that way and not be grey.
For the gumpaste, maybe you could paint it?
You could try painting on the black color. Mix the food coloring with clear alcohol or flavoring (I use almond flavoring) and then paint it on. If you have an airbrush you could try that. Wilton makes spray cans of coloring (kind of like an airbrush) you could see if they have black and try that. Good luck.
Yes - definitely paint the gumpaste! You can use the gel straight out of the bottle. When I have made black icing before, you have to use A LOT!! I usually make a stiffer icing for it, so you could maybe try and add a little more powdered sugar to compensate for the gel? Or, if you have time make chocolate and then add black, at least BC isn't hard to make!
yup def paint the gumpaste but maybe thin it with a little vodka or vanilla if you have it to decrease the water content- if you can let your black icing set overnight it should darken a good bit- relax take a deep breath !!!
Thanks everyone for the fast responses! Ya'll ROCK!!!
I just tried painting some of the ribbon im just scared it wont all dry in time for me to put the ribbon together tonight?I guess i could do it in the morning(put it together) Im bringing it in the morning....
Whats a good recipe for Chocolate buttercream? Oh and Im using WILTON coloring... Thanks again
don't use the wilton black spray - I have bought 3 bottles of that stuff and it has never sprayed out black - usually a cross between a grey and a purple (I know, weird)
Just paint it. Actually go to the store and pick up one of those awful Wilton spray on color thingymajig. Use a mask or your nose will be black!
Edited to add: tdybear1978 says it doesn't work, but tdybear1978 did you start with gray?
Try hand painting with straight gel. I know that works.
I am assuming you haven't iced your cake yet, I hope not anyway. I would pobably paint the bow with the colouring, though I would dilute it with a couple drops of vodka. Vodka is clear alchohol and will dry quicker than water, hopefully not weakening your bow's structure. If your bow does start to weaken, or you have to dilute with water prop it up with clear wrap so it maintains the shape during dry time. As far as the icing, did you start with a white base? Whenever I need black I use a cocoa base, it's easier to get black from a dark base. If you can, try adding some cocoa to darken it with your color. Maybe even start over with a cocoa base (brown) then add the black? If you end up adding too much color you may start breaking down your icing and end up with a grey of sweet soup.
I hope this helps and good luck to you! If this doesn't help or present an option stay tuned ... incredibly talented members on this site! Someone may save you yet ![]()
I never use Wilton black for my colors any more. As a matter of fact, I hardly ever use Wilton gel colors for my icing. I live and die by Candy-n-cake powdered food color. The colors come out so true to color. Blacks are black, reds are red, yellow is yellow....well you get the point. You don't have to use a WHOLE lot of it (is that country sounding LOL) and the flavor isn't affected (and I just ran over and tasted my black that's been there for a minute in storage, and it tastes great...no after-taste). If you can run to your cake decorating store, you can add this to your icing and it will come out black. I promise you that one. The gumpaste, I'd probably airbrush it or paint it black. Are you using any other colors in this design and is this design your own? (you know, not out of a book or something)
I used the powders too and they are great! If I do need a liquid and I only have that color in the powder I just dilute with vodka (no taste when it dries). I have a whole cupboard with mixed colorings from gel to liquid airbrush, to powders. I have to admit the powders are good, I end up using them more than anything else.
Oh, Cake-n-Candy is made by CK products. I can only find it in my cake decorating store...not in Michael's, Walmart etc. But I never have to start out with cocoa or chocolate icing to use it.
Thanks everyone... I didnt have Vodka so i used the Vanilla Extract... And it seems to be working... I havent iced the cake yet! ![]()
Umm its a white(icing) round stack cake(10inch/12inch) with black and pink fondant circles all over it and a black and pink bow... Ive seen some similar on this site, its pretty basic!
