I'm making a cake for a wedding tomorrow that will have scrollwork all around all tiers. Does anyone have any tips for the placement of the design so it fills the sides without making it look too busy? Does that make sense?

Thanks
Debbie

If it works - here's a link to a similar cake. . .

Hi there! I just did my practice cake (for a wedding) and I have some scroll work on there. I just started by putting on some scrolls and making sure that they were quite spacious then I would look at it from a distance (or take a pic on my digital camera) and then see where I should put some more. I think that this helped so that it wasn't too busy. And, it also helped so that there weren't any major empty spots. I'm sorry that I couldn't be any more help! Here is the link to my cake:

Chen ~ your cake looks great! Love the brilliant blue.

I finished the cake last night and just got back from delivering it. I did pretty much the same thing. Just eyed it. It turned out beautifully! I hope they're as happy with it as I am.

Debbie

Thanks everyone!

I have a question. What do you use to do the scroll work? For piping it on? And the icing (?) used to scroll? Does this make sense? I am completely new at all of this cake making business.

First of all how do you even have time to make cakes that's crazy! I have a three year old & just thinking of adding another kiddo. Most of my scroll work I use a tip 10 depends on if you want texture to your scroll work you can use tip 21 just really depends. I do all my work in butter cream for scroll work. Hope this helps

Thanks everyone! The cake was done entirely in buttercream. I used a tip #4 to pipe the scrolls. I certainly underestimated the time it would take to pipe them all. I'll take that into account if I make another one!
