Should I Be Feeling Guilty??? Sorry It's Long

Hey everyone,
Not sure if I should be feeling guilty or not so I thought I'd run this by you all. I'll start at the start.
Last Nov I started at the job I'm at at the moment. When I took it they told me I would only ever be employed as casual, that I'd start off on 27 hours/week and I'd have a three month trial. Well at the end of Feb they cut my hours back to 20 a week which doesn't seem like much of a cut but I can't pay all my bills on that many hours. They told me that it would only be for a couple of weeks. Well when it got to the first week of April I asked my boss if I was going to be getting any more hours and she said no.
Well about a week ago I heard of a full-time job going in the same field that I work in so I decided to try my luck and applied for it and I got the phone call tonight to say that I got it. Now I'm feeling terribly guilty as my boss has just gone on two weeks holiday but i have to start at my new job before she comes back which means that they will be short staffed for one week. I've already accepted the other job and I'm trying to figure out why I feel guilty because it's not like I have done anything wrong. Or have I???
Any thoughts???
No, you haven't done anything wrong, and shouldn't feel guilty!
When you asked about getting more hours and they said no, that should have been a signal to them that you might be looking for something else.
Keep in mind a bumper sticker that I have seen a few times and love:
"A failure to plan on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part."
Whoever is filling in for your boss will just have to handle it - that's the way it goes.
Let us know what happens!
Laura.
thank you laura.
if you can't tell i'm in australia, it's midnight and i've been having so much trouble sleeping so i thought i'd jump on here and vent lol
it's helped but i dont think i can sleep yet. i'll let you know how it goes with the boss
No. Did they feel guilty for cutting your hours?
You should NEVER feel guilty for improving your quality of life, on whatever level that may be.
Enjoy your new job! Let go of that guilt! It's not productive and you don't need it!
Congratulations on the new job! What wonderful news!
I agree with the other posters. You have to do what is best for you. The timing is unfortunate for them but that is just the way it goes.
You should not feel guilty about making a decision that is in the best interest of you and your family. The truth is if you can't get by on what you are making because they cut back your hours it is your responsiblity to do what you need to do to remedy the situation. Trust me, they will find a way to get along without you, it is a shame that they couldn't see what a valued employee you are because it is obviously effecting you. Don't feel guilty ![]()
Congrats on the new job!! I agree with everyone else. There's absolutley no reason for you to feel guilty for trying to improve your way of life. You do what you have to do! And lotsoftots is right, they probably had no qualms about cutting your hours. It's all part of a business cycle. People come and go. You just happen to be the one going!! Good luck with it all and enjoy your new job!!!
Just one question: Who takes care of you? Obviously the answer is YOU!!!
You feed yourself, You pay your bills, YOU YOU YOU!!
Dont ever feel bad. Will they really be short??? I mean, look at how much they cut your hours back? Why would they do that if they're worried about being "short?"
There's nothing wrong with bettering yourself and your lifestyle!!
What they said. . . the rule in business is, they got along before you came along and they will survive after you've gone. . .
Congratulations on the new job!! Go for it, you deserve it!
Leslie
i guess i'm just worried about handing in my resignation and having to work with them for another week. and yes they did survive before i came along and i'm sure they will after i'm gone.
thank you all so much *hugs* to everyone
I agree never feel guilty about bettering yourself. You may be suprised at your coworkers reactions. When anyone from our work leaves, even though it will be a bit harder on us, we always congratulate them and tell them "good for you" and we mean it. Everyone understands about paying the bills! If they react badly, just remember you only have 1 week to deal with it.
mmdd,
they will be a lil worried about being short because i'm the one that does the hours that noone wants to do which includes saturday mornings. but it's not my problem now. so i guess i should just stop worrying and enjoy the long weekend.
Congratulations on your new full-time job!
Hugs Squirrelly
Congratulations on new job.
Stop feeling guilty, you did nothing wrong.
I do hope you will take your mind off of it and look forward to your new job. I'm sure yuo'll have all the money you need to pay your bills and some to save. Yay!!!
Let them suffer a bit, they made you, LOL!!!!
Don't feel bad, at all!!! You did NOTHING wrong!!
Good Luck!!!
to update you all i got a phone call from my boss today and she wanted me to explain my letter. so i just said that well it's means i'm resigning. she asked me why and i told her that i wasn't getting enough hours and she actually sounded surprised/shocked.
she also said that i was leaving them a bit short so i aplogised but said there was nothing i could about it. well tuesday morning should be interesting when i get to work. i'll let you all know what happens.
thank you everyone for your words of encouragement
Congratulations with your new job!!!
I can really understand that you feel guilty, but you don't have to!
I have once applied for a new job when i was on maternity-leave (is it called this way? I just delivered my first child and dd the job intervies between two breastfeedings
)
i got the job and i felt so terribly guilty that i had to tell i wasn't coming back after my leave!
So enjoy your new job!!!
This advice has served me well in my career. Gone are the days when you worked for a company from the day you started working until the day you retire. You are your number one customer. You need to take care of the customer. A company will not feel guilty for cutting your hours or firing you. Nor will they give you two weeks notice that you are going to be fired. Giving notice is good, however you should never feel guilty for doing so. You inquired about additional hours and they did not meet your needs, or 'make the customer happy' therefore, you must take your business elsewhere. Good luck on the new job and I hope it all works out for you! ![]()
if it were possible, I'd take the whole week off to get self and house (new job is full time..so cleaning, well, that becomes problematic!) ready
as to "leaving us short handed" me response would have been along the lines of : well your cutting my hours left me short of cash, I have bills to pay and I can't pay then on these hours or pay.
you don't owe them a thing!!!!!
hear's praying your new job will be one you love and will make your life better.
